Many of you have probably lived in Preston for a majority of your life and may not have known about the Preston Area Community Foundation, or PACF. PACF is an organization that serves the Preston area by supporting programs and projects that help improve and build a stronger community. I am honored to say that I am a student advisor on PACF.
Being a part of this organization is a great opportunity and it is full of many "real world" experiences. For me, being one of the student advisors is an honor as only two upcoming seniors, who live in Preston, are selected; one boy and one girl. Caleb Quanrud was the boy advisory asked to be apart of the organization. On May 6, 2010, Caleb and I were elected as advisory members to the board. Since our election onto the board, Caleb and I attend all the PACF meetings.
The Preston Area Community Foundation experience will be something that will shape me for my lifetime. Working with adults and trying to improve our community by deciding which projects will benefit the community the most has been great preparation for me in what awaits in my future. As a student advisor, you learn to think of others around you and how it will affect them, not just yourself. All the experiences I have had with being a part of PACF have made a difference in my life. I love to volunteer in my community, and I thank the Preston Area Community Foundation board members for giving me this great opportunity.
If any of you reading this article would like to learn more, you can contact me or other members of PACF: Charles Aug, Dwight Luhmann, Sheila Craig, Craig Mensink, Dustin Arndt, Rick Grooter, Sharyol O'Connor, Donna Dreier, Jeff Wand, Tim Bremseth, Sally Gibson, and Caleb Quanrud. Also, if you would like to support the Preston Area Community Foundation, we will be hosting our annual dinner at the Branding Iron on May 28, 2011. It is planned to be an eventful night starting with a social hour and silent auction at 5:30, dinner at 6:30 and a guest speaker to follow. Tickets are on sale at F&M Community Bank. We hope to see you all there!
Jennifer Quanrud is a student at Fillmore Central High School. She is one of 10 area students participating in the Journal Writing Project, now in its twelfth year.
