Lowell D. Roelofs, 72, of Greenleafton, a longtime area farmer, died Dec. 6, 2002 at the Harmony Care Center.

Lowell was born Sept. 29, 1930, in Bristol Township, Fillmore County, the son of Evert and Vera (Mensink) Roelofs. He graduated from Preston High in 1948 and then farmed with his father until enlisting in the Army in 1954. Following his discharge in 1956, he returned to the family farm and continued to farm until 2001. On May 23, 1959, he married Evelyn Mensink at Greenleafton Reformed Church. They moved to Greenleafton in 1998. Mr. Roelofs worked part time at Paris Foods in Cresco, Iowa, and also farmed with a nephew. A lifelong member of Greenleafton Reformed Church, he served as a deacon, Sunday school treasurer, brotherhood treasurer and youth leader. He was a past president of the Fillmore County Farm Bureau, served on its board for several years, and also served on the Fillmore County FmHA Board, Fillmore County Water Committee, Bristol Township Board, York Township Board and the Preston School Board. He was active in the Republican Party and was a seed dealer for many years. He enjoyed music, bowling and sporting events.

Survived by his wife; three sons; Bruce (Anne) of Cresco, Brian (Suzanne) of Lakeville, Minn., and Brent of Preston; six grandchildren; two sisters, Gayle (Roger) Eskra of Beatrice, Neb., and Joyce (Joe) Collett of Chandler, Ariz.; and a brother, Jon (Susan) of Cedar Rapids, Iowa.

The funeral for Lowell D. Roelofs was Dec. 10, 2002 at Greenleafton Reformed Church, with the Rev. Jonathon Loper officiating. Burial was in Greenleafton Cemetery. Thauwald Funeral Home in Preston was in charge of arrangements.
