Mary Irene Frank, 45, of Minneapolis, formerly of Preston, died of health complications April 14, 2003 at her home.

Born Sept. 4, 1957, in Rochester, the daughter of Mavis and Lyle Frank, she attended Preston public schools, and graduated from the University of Wisconsin-Stout and William Mitchell Law School. She was a court advocate for the Hennepin County district attorney and a social worker in Blue Earth County. Beginning as a domestic abuse project volunteer, she became crisis intervention program coordinator training the police, community groups, judges and mental-health professionals and became legal advocacy program director for the domestic abuse project. An active Native American advocate, her tribal name was Wawokiyaw. She was an election judge, an active member of the American Diabetes Association and was involved with Oasis in Golden Valley, Minn. She enjoyed cooking, gardening, traveling, reading, pets and volunteering.

Survivors include her parents, Mavis Lentz Frank and Lyle Frank of Preston; two sisters, LaDonna (Jack) Kranz of St. Charles and Carolyn Frank of Olympia, Wash.; and three brothers, Noel (Noel) Frank of Owatonna, Carlton (Gina) of Albert Lea and Chris (Tracy) of Custer, S.D.

A memorial service was April 18, 2003 at Christ Lutheran Church in Preston, with the Revs. Jennifer Graf and James Rushton co-officiating. The body has been cremated.

Thauwald Funeral Home in Preston was in charge of arrangements.
