Diedrich ‘Dick’ Niedfeldt, 84, of Rochester, formerly of Canton, died September. 7, 2003 at Madonna Towers Nursing Care of Rochester.

He was born July 4, 1919, in Bangor, Wis., and attended Bangor-area schools through the eighth grade. From 1939 to 1945 he served in the Navy with duty in the Pacific Theater on the heavy cruiser USS Portland for four years and on the submarine USS Atule for two years. After his discharge he worked at the Mabel Elevator. In 1947 he married Jean Mathison of Mabel and they moved to Anoka, Minn. He attended Dunwoody Institute in Minneapolis, and after receiving his journeyman and master’s electrician license in 1956 they moved to Canton. Mr. Niedfeldt owned and operated Dick’s Electric for nearly 40 years until his retirement. He was a member of the Canton Fire Department, Canton American Legion and the Mabel VFW, and was a director of the Canton State Bank. An active member of Henrytown Lutheran Church, he served as president of the church council, treasurer and deacon, and was on call committee and the cemetery board.

Survivors include a son; Steven (Debra) of Rochester; two daughters, Susan (Ron) Kurth of St. Charles and Candace (Dan) McElroy of Rochester; and five grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his wife, a daughter, a son, seven brothers and a sister.

The funeral for Diedrich “Dick” Niedfeldt was September 10, 2003 at Henrytown Lutheran Church north of Canton. Burial was in the Spring Valley Cemetery. Abraham-Lindstrom Funeral Home in Harmony was in charge of arrangements.
