RRED Superintendents� Special Education Meeting

November 8, 2004

Meeting called to order. Present were Myrna Luehmann, Jim Busta, Greg Ehresmann, Phil Minkkinen, Rick Lamon and Mary Rae. Guests included Tammy Stolz, Minette Stalhelm Johnson and Dan Collett.

Agenda was reviewed and J. Busta moved to approve it. P. Minkkinen seconded. The minutes of the October 2004 meeting were reviewed and M. Luehmann moved to accept with J. Busta�s second. Bill payments were reviewed. Discussion regarding the cost and licensing of a teacher of the visually impaired followed. A motion to approve the payment of the bills was made by R. Lamon and J. Busta seconded.

Tammy Stolz requested to be on the agenda to share with the group the activities and purpose of the Root River Interagency Committee. By law, membership of certain agencies in the county is mandated as the group works with children with disabilities from Birth to 21.

Dan Collett gave an update on the Day Treatment program. He had questions about the possibility of requiring students that did not complete their assignments being required to stay after school. Research will be done on the viability of this proposal and brought back to the group.

Minette Stalheim Johnson stressed the need for staff participation in the Fillmore County Family Services Collaborative �random moment� request. Funding depends on the types of activities that qualified staff are involved in at the time a survey is taken. The next FCFSC meeting is scheduled for November 18, 2004.

M. Luehmann described the �Early Risers� program. It is designed for skill building for kindergarten through 2nd grade students and their parents. It is an early intervention system that promotes a positive self-image, coping and problem solving skills, positive attitudes toward learning and parental competence and capacity to support a child�s development.

The 2004-2005 budget is in the system. The annual audit is being completed.

There is a need for a long term substitute for Speech/Language services in the Kingsland district beginning in January. Announcements have been sent to all the schools with programs in Minnesota, Iowa, Wisconsin and South Dakota.

Five 75 minute long sessions on Autism are scheduled for November 15, 29, December 6, 13, 2004 and January 10, 2005. The sessions are open to special and regular education staff, paraprofessionals and parents. All 5 sessions will be held at the Middle School Library in Preston. Another series of Kansas Learning Strategies is scheduled for February 10, 2005 and March 18, 2005. These workshops are open to all licensed staff working with students with disabilities.
