"Thank you for a great day! It was awesome!" That was the e-mail message waiting for me when I arrived at my office the morning after the Fourth Grade Farm Safety Day Camp.

I don't know how we continue to be so fortunate. We had beautiful weather again for the joint Fillmore/Houston fourth grade Farm Safety Day Camp held at the Mabel Steam Engine Grounds. The students were enthused, the presenters and FFA helpers were at their best. I just know it takes a lot of community support to make an event like this possible!

And now, these are the people I would like to thank!

The 402 students, their teachers, and chaperones from 12 schools, the fourth grade classes from Fillmore Central, Houston, Rushford-Peterson, Lanesboro, St. John's Wykoff, Caledonia, St. Mary's Caledonia, Chatfield, Mabel-Canton, Spring Grove, La Crescent, Crucifixion La Crescent, and six independent students.

The City of Mabel provides much needed support from the EMT Ambulance Crew, Fire Department, and use of the Steam Engine Grounds. Plus the Hesper-Mabel Historical Old Barn is a great place to serve lunch.

T-shirts sponsors were GenerationX Construction and the Lanesboro Sales Commission.

Preston Equipment Co. provided the tractor, spreader, and riding lawn mowers. Kingsley Mercantile, Harmony, provided the push lawn mowers and Neil Storlie of Storlie's Portable Pit Stops, Spring Grove, provided port-a-potties.

The volunteer presenters are the people who really make this possible. Listed by topic and the organization they represent are: Electric Safety, Tri-County Electric, Brad Pecinovsky; PTO Safety, Fillmore/Houston Extension, Jerrold Tesmer, Nick Drinkall; Mabel Ambulance, Mabel EMT, Neil Folstad, Ashley Folstad, Brian Guber; Lawn Mower Safety, Houston Extension, Kelly Wilkins, M-C FFA Gabe Lind; ATV Safety, Jared Barnes, Dean Thomas; Grain Drowning, Fillmore Farm Bureau Jeff Eickhoff, Chatfield FFA Katie Winslow, Harmony Vet Clinic, Dr. Tyler Dohlman; Tractor Rollover, Houston Farm Bureau, Germaine Davison, Cynthie Washburn, Katie Denstad, M-C FFA Justin Ward; Livestock Safety, Harmony Vet Clinic, Dr. Lynn Aggen, M-C FFA Megan Witt; Sun Safety, Caledonia FFA Chris Dvorak, Eric Houdek, Nick Schaller; 911 Simulator, Fillmore County Sheriff's Office, Mike Ask, Dan Dornink; Basic First Aid, Chatfield Ambulance EMT, Sue Kester, Ed Hallisy; Seat Belt/ General Farm, Fillmore Public Health, Brenda Pohlman and Fire Safety, Mabel Fire Department, Bob Schutte.

This year we had the Mayo One helicopter in the morning and Gundersen Lutheran MedLink Air in the afternoon. The flight crew for Mayo One included: Bruce Goodman, Rob Baker, Neil Weink, and Ramon Yambo Arias. The MedLink Air Crew was Julie Gollnick, Nate Seger, and John Clements. The helicopters add a lot of excitement as they land and take-off. It is always an added bonus. This is the first time we have ever had two attend the Farm Safety Day Camp.

The Mabel-Canton FFA members assisted presenters, helped with set-up, clean-up, and provided much of the needed logistical support and muscle. I apologize for having incomplete names. Those not listed earlier include: Logan Henry, Stephanie Hafner, Kristina Mengis, Christy Welscher, Morgan Roppe, Mason Henry, Abby Hanson, Brittany Williams, and Victoria Y. The Spring Grove FFA and Fillmore Central FFA provided group leaders. Spring Grove leaders were; Nick Wiste, Levi Hermanson, Taylor Borreson, Kyle Sylling, Brandon Schuttemeier, Kyle Lee, Mikal Guberud, and Evan Howard. Fillmore Central FFA leaders: Mitch Ristau, Braden Hahn, Cody Erickson, Brady McCabe, Luke Bergey, Adam McCabe, and Alex Peterson.

Special thanks to their respective FFA Advisor's Dennis Rud, Brad Harguth, Lisa Sackreiter, and Karen Tisthammer.

The commodity group providing lunch this year was the Houston County Cattlemen. The hamburgers were prepared by Jerry Welke, Bob Scanlan, Greg Meyer, Cindy Welke and Judy Tollefsrud, with LeeAnn Howard helping serve. Other organizations providing food included Kwik Trip-bananas, Houston DHIA, Houston ADA, Fillmore DHIA, and Fillmore ADA-Milk. Rushford, Harmony, Preston Foods provided the chips. They served something over 500 people!

Each year I have the fear I will forget to mention someone, because everyone was important in making Farm Safety Day Camp possible!
