ST. PAUL, Minn. March 19, 2011 - an innovative teaching project developed by local educators is getting a boost, thanks to a foundation created by Education Minnesota members. The Fillmore Central Sr. High Art Department joins 46 other classroom projects as the 2010/2011 recipients of grants from the Education Minnesota Foundation for Excellence in Teaching and Learning. Project coordinator Carrie Mathison was recognized during Education Minnesota's 2011 Representative Convention, March 19 in Bloomington, MN.

The Education Minnesota Foundation gave $3000 to the 7-12 grade art department at Fillmore Central. The funding will provide jewelry and metal work equipment, expanding students options and experiences in the area of 3-D art. Through the implementation of jewelry and metal work, students will develop skills in attention to detail, precision, metal work and 3-D processes, and additional medium experiences. The funding will allow the purchase of jeweler saws, clamps, blocks, mandrels, a buffing unit, a metal bench sears, sheet metal and more for the production of pendants, bracelets, key chains, rings, and more. Education Minnesota Foundation awarded more than $14,000 in grants ranging from $500 to $3000. The foundation supports initiatives by Education Minnesota members, locals, and affiliates which promote education for students and excellence in teaching and learning.

"These projects represent the innovative thinking and creative approach to teaching and learning for which our members are known," states Education Minnesota President Tom Dooher. "We are proud to help support these efforts, many of which would not be possible with existing school funds."
