Have you started making plans to improve your grazing in 2012? There will be a Winter Grazing Update on Saturday, January 21 at the Good Times Restaurant in Caledonia. A full day is planned, with registration at 9:30 am and the program beginning at 10:00 am.
We will start the day with Dr. James Gray, Ruminant Vet, Spring Grove, his discussion will center on "Herd Health in Preparation for the Upcoming Calving Season". University of Minnesota Extension Meats Specialist Ryan Cox will lead us in a look at "Management of Grass Fed Beef." After short updates from FSA, NRCS, Extension, and GLCA a roast beef lunch will be served.
The afternoon will highlight local grazer Tom Scarponcini's operation. Tom grazes 350 head of beef cows north of Rushford. He will describe how grazing fits the topography of his farm. John Zinn, NRCS Grazing Planner, will complete the afternoon with a discussion on "Taste and Grazing Animals: How they decide what and how much to eat."
No pre-registration is required for the Winter Grazing Update. There will be a $10.00 fee to cover the morning refreshments and noon meal. The Good Times Restaurant is located at 118 Bissen Street, Caledonia, MN.
Sponsors for the event include the GLCA, University of Minnesota Extension, NRCS, and SWCD. For further information contact Jerry Tesmer, Fillmore County Extension Office 507-765-3896, Houston County Extension Office 507-725-5807 or e-mail tesme001@umn.edu.
