Do you Google? Who doesn't use the #1 online search engine in the world?

As an estimated 73 percent of the U.S. population uses the Internet on a daily basis, an online presence has become a mainstay for certain types of businesses and industry categories.

Websites have become an additional marketing tool for businesses hoping to reach a broader audience 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, 365 days a year. And visitors have grown to expect that every business they are searching for will have a website.

So, which websites in Fillmore County boast the most traffic?

As we look at how website traffic is measured, the most often referenced statistics refer to page views and unique visitors.

Each time a user visits a Web page, it is called a page view.

Unique visitors are measured according to their unique IP addresses, which are like online fingerprints; counted only once no matter how many times they visit the site.

The marketing gurus of Fillmore County, Lanesboro has become a tourism mecca of Southeastern Minnesota and the tri-state area.

In 2008, this website boasted 1,450,996 page views with a total of 148,335 unique visitors.

Then, in 2009, this website boasted 2,513,804 page views with a total of 259,584 unique vistiors.

According to the Lanesboro Area Chamber of Commerce Executive Director Julie Kiehne, eleven enhancements to their website have attributed to their increased website traffic.

Here's the magic list:

2. Credit card processing, selling Christmas Inn Tour tickets and Lanesboro lodging gift certificates online

3. Lanesboro lodging gift certificate program

4. Getaway Packages, for customer convenience, businesses cross-market their products without discounting

5. Testimonials, rotating testimonials on their homepage.

6. Downloadable Visitor Guide, available to download separate categories of information

7. New Lanesboro video and series of videos on YouTube.com

8. Opt-in e-mail list, generating over 1,000 subscribers in the first season.

9. Webervations/RezOvations, online lodging availability program

10. Search Engine Optimization, hiring a consultant to assist the Chamber in maximizing organic searches.

11. Google Ad Words, initiating a cost per click ad campaign.

According to a Circulation Verification Audit referencing a 12-month period ending September 30, 2009, this website stacked up 432,780 page views with a total of 139,104 unique visitors.

Being a news and information driven website focused solely on the interests of people living and working in Fillmore County, Minn., the most notable attractions on this website are obituaries, classifieds, letters to the editor and videos. Since launching videos, accompanied with a variety of stories on a weekly basis, the newspaper has seen a range of 2,700 to 11,000 click-throughs per week on videos alone.

This website is also involved in social media, with fans on the Fillmore County Journal Facebook.com group, a YouTube.com channel and a Tweeter account for those who like to "tweet."

According to Jerome Illg, the city administrator of Harmony, Minn., the Harmony's website does not currently have the capabilities of measuring statistics beyond the past two months. During the past couple months, this website hosted 11,112 page views with a total of 2,295 unique visitors, with more than 21 percent of those users seeking visitor information.

This website allows visitors to view events, maps, local news, city information and references to the Harmony Economic Development Authority.

According to Joe Hoffman, the city administrator of Preston, Minn., the "Trout Capital of Minnesota" website attracted 69,255 page views with a total of 42,140 unique visitors, with nearly one-third, 21,075, of the total page views in 2009.

Visitors seem most attracted to the six webpages dedicated to tourism, with the remaining 64 pages posting 25,323 statistics.

According to Cheryl Davis, the city clerk and treasurer of Wykoff, Minn., the city's website does not currently have the capabilities of measuring statistics beyond the past two months. During the past couple months, this website hosted 1,069 page views with a total of 216 unique visitors, with more than 33 percent of those users seeking tourism and business information.

This website allows visitors to view events, meeting agendas, city officals, ordinances, news, online polls, tourism links, and opportunities to provide feedback.

According to Karen Brown, the Fillmore County Coordinator, their website drew 1,315,026 page views with a total of 49,439 unique visitors in 2009, with the top ten most popular searches beyond the homepage:

According to Joel Young, city clerk, providing web statistics for the Chatfield, Minn., website, the city does not currently have the capabilities of measuring statistics based on date ranges unless the information is captured throughout the year. During the month of December 2009, this website attracted 9,077 page views with a total of 1,312 unique visitors. The highest website traffic this website has ever attracted, based on data provided by Joel Young, was in April 2008, when there was a steady flow amounting to 13,940 page views with 2,124 unique visitors.

This website is full of live streaming video, so visitors can watch anything from high school football games to school board meetings to city government meetings. Visitors will also find contact information for city departments, a business directory, new resident information, ordinances, and public meeting documentation such as agendas and minutes.

According to Heather Larson, providing web statistics for the Rushford, Minn., website, the city does not currently have the capabilities of measuring statistics beyond the past two months. During the past couple months, this website hosted 3,695 page views with a total of 854 unique visitors.

This website allows visitors to view events, government links, press releases, contact information for the city of Rushford, along with referring links to websites for the Rushford Area Chamber of Commerce and the Rushford Institute for NanoTechnology (RINTek).
