Dependence Day

"But the eyes of the LORD are on those who fear him, on those whose hope is in his unfailing love, to deliver them from death and keep them alive in famine. We wait in hope for the LORD; he is our help and our shield." Psalm 33:18-20 NIV

"We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men are created equal, that they are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable Rights, that among these are Life, Liberty and the pursuit of Happiness (second sentence of the Declaration of Independence)."

As our country celebrates another "Independence Day," the words, "Life Liberty and the pursuit of Happiness," often becomes the focus. Without the intervention of "their Creator," the outcomes of the wintering at Valley Forge and the risky crossing of the Delaware River on Christmas Day to surprise the Hessians in Trenton might have been different. The Declaration of Independence is often considered the start of the Revolutionary War and rightly demonstrates a respect for God held by the founders of our nation.

Respect for God is of great value, but it is only a beginning. There is a purpose behind the actions of God and his providence to mankind. God desires that we might know him and the Savior he sent. Our future and the future of our nation depends on God. Along with the fireworks, parades and family gatherings, take time this 4th of July to learn more about the Maker upon whom we are all dependent. See you in church!
