And so it begins, my opening writing venture for the Fillmore County Journal. A lifelong Preston resident and 1997 Fillmore Central graduate, the Journal has been coming to my house for as long as I can remember. I sometimes wondered why it never had a sports section. Fortunately for me (and others), now it does.
I've always been passionate about sports. It started with Michael Jordan and the Chicago Bulls in the 1980's and 1990's. Then, there were the organized activities I participated in: fast-pitch softball in the Greenleafton area, slow-pitch softball in Lanesboro, summer league basketball in Winona, and of course, high school basketball (some) and football for Fillmore Central. I even got recruited to play football at Winona State, but I settled for collegiate intramurals. It was there I developed an intense passion for something quite sports related-exercise. Nowadays, I lift weights six days a week, bike, hike, run, and participate in sports whenever possible. I spend way too much time examining college basketball and fantasy football! Anyway, I wouldn't necessarily call myself a fanatic. I'm more of an extreme analyst, and a fanatic.
I also have a passion for writing. It was probably spawned at Winona State where I graduated with a Marketing degree, though exercise science was my preferred focus. Between the two disciplines, I wrote just enough research papers to actually like doing so. Mostly, I liked when everything came together and I knew what I had written was good. Professors seemed to agree. In combination with an active mind, too much time on my hands, and an eye for a good movie plot, something inspired by the hundreds of films I've watched, I've even channeled my literary fervor into a three-part novel of my own (that someday I might actually complete).
Until I do, I'll do Jason a service, the Journal a service, and hopefully everyone in the area a service, and combine the two things I enjoy, writing and sports. I'll keep Journal readers up to date on the local prep athletics scene. I'm looking forward to it. I hope it expands the Journal's reach and better satisfies the Journal's customers.
