PRESTON - The Fillmore County Board continued reviewing 2007 budget proposals from several departments at their August 8 meeting. Commissioners look through detailed budget proposals for items that can be reduced or that may need additional dollars. These presentations and the tweaking here and there is one step in the arduous process of building a budget for the next year.
Assessor Robert Pickett noted little change in his department's budget. Pickett did request and received approval for the partial payment to Hiller Brothers for the rural addressing sign installation. He stated that the sign installation is over half way completed.
A discussion ensued about a small number of signs which have been installed that don't correspond with the E911 addresses assigned. Each rural Fillmore County property owner should have received an official notification letter from the county. If the sign posted does not correspond with the official address people have been assigned, they should call any county commissioner or Danea Larson at 765-2806 to report the discrepancy.
Sanitation
Jon Martin reviewed his budget proposal. Board members discussed possible changes to improve the method for dropping off used oil for recycling. Currently, the receptacle for collecting the oil is about ten feet above ground level and requires people to carry buckets up steps. The plan is to either use a pump or lower the receptacle so the oil can be poured from the height of a pick-up bed.
Sandra Benson noted that recycling volume is gradually going up. Volume increases as it is made more convenient for people to recycle.
EDA
Cris Gastner, Economic Development Authority, highlighted projects and future plans. The Fillmore County Comprehensive Plan was completed this year. Gastner remarked that the first cooperative tax abatement, the Lutes-Scrabeck Addition, in the county went relatively smoothly. The county made it's first two business loans with the County Revolving Loan Program. Gastner hopes to broaden the loan program to promote new business. He wants to make business people aware of business assistance programs that are available to help and to answer questions.
