SG Avenges Loss to Rockets, Grinde Scores 1,000th at M-C

February 22, 2021 by Fillmore County Journal Leave a Comment

The young Lion boys avenged their only loss and remained atop the SEC East by handing visiting Randolph a second league loss, 67-54.  Three nights later, Caden Grinde scored his 1,000th point while the Lions swept Mabel-Canton, 60-24.  The week ended with SG (8-1 SEC, 8-1 overall) leading second-place Randolph (5-2, 6-3).  Against the Rockets, a 22-2 scoring run, featuring fast breaks and 3-pointers, propelled the Lions to a 36-16 halftime lead.  SG had five turnovers over their first 14 possessions, but one turnover over their next 18 possessions.  The Rockets never led while suffering through a cold-shooting, turnover-plagued first half. They played better after halftime but could not slow down SG. The Lions handled all five defenses that Randolph threw at them.  The Rockets hit eight second half threes, but only got as close as 11 (63-52).  Caden Grinde put in 19 points (5-6 FGs, 7-12 FTs, 7 rebs, 7 asts, 4 stls, 3 blks).  Tysen Grinde tossed in 17 points (6-11 FGs).  Freshman Elijah Solum added 14 points (6-12 FGs).  Carson Gerard had 13 (pts) and 6 (rebs).   SG, able to penetrate with the dribble and get to the free throw line for 21 attempts (14 for 21, 67%), attempted few 3-pointers, but hit a hot 56% (5 for 9) beyond the arc and also 56% overall.  Randolph shot 34% from the field (16-47), 28% from deep (8-29), and 82% from the line (14-17).  Tyson Cooreman had 18 to lead team double-R.  Against M-C, Grinde scored 24 points, matching the M-C team total in a 60-24 SG win. Grinde’s 1,000th career point came on a first-half dunk.  Caden and Tysen Grinde (8 points) both had 8 rebounds and 4 steals. Gerard had 12 (pts) and 6 (rebs).  Solum added 9 (pts), 5 (asts), and 5 (stls). It was SG’s fourth straight win.  Gavin Johnson (6 pts) led M-C.

Knights Down Rebels, Hold Larks to 18, Streak to Eight

It wasn’t his 1,000th point but Spring Grove senior Caden Grinde throws down a slam amidst the Lions key SEC-East 67-54 win over Randolph. See “Athlete of the Week” for more.

From a division perspective, it was a big week for Kingsland girls basketball.  The Knights played their top two West challengers.  At Southland (4-3) in the teams’ second meeting, Kingsland (6-1) led 31-25 at halftime.  In the second half, the Rebels twice got within four.  Kingsland built its edge to ten four times.  Steve Hauser’s group prevailed 62-56.  Ellie Buchholtz (21 pts, 6-10 FGs, 4-5 threes, 5-7 FTs, 5 rebs, 3 asts, 6 stls) and Sam Wernimont (17 pts, 5-10 FGs, 3-5 threes, 4-4 FTs) led the way.  Anika Reiland (8 pts, 7 rebs, 7 stls) and Shelby Beck (5 pts, 5 rebs, 4 asts) helped.  The Knights notched season-bests in threes made (nine), three-percentage (9-22 > 41%), and free throw percentage (15-20 > 75%).  Kingsland won the first game with the Rebels 53-46.  Two nights later, GM (5-4) came to town for the teams’ second meeting.  Kingsland’s pressure “D” was stifling.  GM led 8-5 midway through the first half, but scored 10 points over the next 26 minutes.  They had one-turnover per minute in that span, 35 total miscues for the game.  Kingsland started the game 0-12 from three, but ended the first half four of seven.  They built a 21-10 halftime lead.  A four-pack of steals and open court layups in succession early in the second half gave team double-K a 31-14 lead.  They prevailed 47-18.  The Knights scored 33 points off turnovers.  They beat GM in transition points 16 to 0.  Buchholtz led the way again (season-high 24 pts, 8-9 FGs, 3-4 threes, 5-6 FTs, 6 stls) with a very efficient game.  It was her fourth straight of scoring 20-plus points (started the season not doing so the first five games).  She went 7 of 9 from distance in the two games (started the season 3 of 30).  Reiland (8 pts, 6 rebs, 5 stls) and Werminont (8 pts) helped offensively.  The freshman Reiland was a menace defensively, constantly hounding GM ball handlers.  She has six games of five-plus steals.  The Larks’ leading scorer River Landers had 7 points.  Kingsland (6-0, 8-1) leads the SEC West over GM (5-3, 5-5), Southland (5-4, 5-4), L-O (3-4, 3-4), and L/P (1-7, 1-9).  The Knights have won eight straight.  GM had a three-game win streak ended.

It was another week of wrestling for the GMLOS Bulldogs and another week of easily ripping through the competition.  They got even better, getting a top wrestler back on the mat.  Randy Smith’s group first pulled the double HVL shut-down.  GMLOS trekked to Pine Island, to take on the Panthers and Byron.  Versus PI, a returning Anthony Romero (106), James Jacobsen (120), Cohen Wiste (126), Braxten Wiste (132), Christian Jacobsen (170), and Noah Sayles (195) had pins.  Lucas Winfield (138), Donovan Felten (145), Daniel Smith (160), and Cameron Sneed (220) won by forfeit.  Rece Voigt (152) had GMLOS’ only non-six-point win, a 12-0 major decision.  The Bulldogs only lost 113, 182, and 285 in picking up a 64-15 win.  Versus the Bears, GMLOS won nine of the first ten weights for a 52-6 lead.  They prevailed 56-21.  Romero (113), J-Jacobsen (120), B-Wiste (132), Felten (145), Voigt (152), and Smith (160) had pins.  Aiden Quintana (106) and C-Wiste (126) won by forfeit.  C-Jacobsen (170 > 13-3) and Sneed (195 > 13-4) won major decisions.   Team GM then hosted a pair of short-handed TRC clubs.  Wabasha-Kellogg sent just five guys out.  The Bulldogs took forfeits at 132 (B-Wiste), 145 (Winfield), 152 (Felten), 160 (Smith), 170 (C-Jacobsen), 195 (Isaiah Fett), 220 (Sneed), and 285 (Christian Luthe).  Quintana (106), Romero (113), J-Jacobsen (120), and C-Wiste (126) started the match off with four straight falls.  Sayles (182) added a pin later.  GMLOS won 78-6.  The Lancers also sent just five guys out.  GMLOS took forfeits at 106 (Quintana), 113 (Romero), 132 (Timmy Hogfeldt), 145 (Winfield), 160 (Smith), 182 (Sayles), 195 (Fett), 220 (Sneed), and 285 (Luthe).  J-Jacobsen (120), C-Wiste (126), Felten (152), and C-Jacobsen (170) had pins.  That final was also 78-6. The only weight GMLOS lost each match was 138.  The wins ran the Bulldogs streak to 14 straight.  They are 14-2 and ranked #8 in Class A.  Romero (#2 at 106), Felten (#7 at 145), Voigt (#2 at 152), Smith (#3 at 160), C-Jacobsen (#5 at 170), Sayles (#2 at 182), and Sneed (#6 at 195) are all ranked individually.

Queensland’s Late Shot Propels GM Girls Past Lanesboro

In this day and age of high school sports, it is sometimes tough to find a highly competitive back-and-forth game.  The chances are probably about 75/25 against.  For those who attended or watched the Lanesboro at Grand Meadow girls game, they got a good one.  The teams battled to the tone of five ties and 18 lead changes.  The visiting Burros held the largest edge, 25-16 later in the first half.  But Ryan Queensland’s Larks ended the stanza on an 11-2 run to tie things at 27 heading to intermission.  The largest second half lead was just five.  In the final six minutes, Lark Kendyl Queensland and Burro Brielle Ruen alternated threes, each make authoring a lead change.  After Ruen hit her second triple in as many possessions, Lanesboro got a three-point-possession (Kaci Ruen free throw, Jessie Schreiber basket off an offensive rebound).  The Burros built a 56-51 lead (2:17).  But GM senior Gina Stier then scored a driving lay-up against the zone.  After a Burro turnover, Sydney Cotton hit a top of the key three.  With 1:29, the game was quickly tied 56-56.  The Burros went empty of their end.  Queensland got to be

the hero, hitting a 17-foot jumper to put the Larks up 58-56 (0:14.3).  The Burros then quickly turned the ball over.  They had too many fouls to give and couldn’t force a GM turnover.  The Larks held on to the ball and a 58-56 win.  Queensland (younger sister of last year’s stand-out Riley Queensland) notched a career-high (20 pts, 7-10 FGs, 4-4 threes, 4 rebs).  River Landers (12 pts, 10 rebs, 4 ass) scored all her points in the first half, Cotton (10 pts, 3 asts) all hers in the second.  Lexy Foster added 6 (pts), 7 (rebs), and 6 (asts).  Stier had 7 points.  Schreiber (17 pts, 3-7 threes) had a season-high for the Burros.  B-Ruen (13 pts, 9 rebs, 3 asts, 4 stls) and K-Ruen (13 pts, 6-7 FGs, 8 rebs) also hit double figures.  Sydney Taylor had 5 (pts), 4 (rebs), and 4 (asts).  It was GM’s third straight win.

Wrestling Things Revolve Around LARP

Things wrestling revolved around LARP’s conglomerate the week of February 8.  The Screamin’ Eagles took part in a pair of duals, going 3-1 overall.  The second triangular also featured Chatfield.  Tim Tekautz and Darrin Hegland’s group first trekked to Hayfield to take on Westfield and Triton.  LARP had no problem taking out Triton.  The Cobras are short-handed, so team Rush Creek grabbed forfeit wins at 106 (Spencer Nelson), 113 (Tyler Kreidemacher), 126 (Carter Jonsgaard), 220 (D.J. Plank), and 285 (Brock Frisik).  Jordan Zibrowski (120), Quintin Betthauser (132), Titan Tekautz (138), and Colin Klug (170) authored pins.  Caleb Mueller (145 > 9-0) and Gable Speltz (152 > 10-2) won major decisions.  Tyler Kryzer (182 > 10-6) won a pure decision.  The final was 65-9.  The match with Westfield (Hayfield/Blooming Prairie) was a good battle that came down to heavyweight.  The Razorbacks won three of the first four weights to lead 18-6.  LARP didn’t lead until Brennan Corcoran’s pin at 160 (28-24).  It was the third of five straight wins for the Screamin’ Eagles (145-182).  But Westfield narrowed the score to 37-34 with wins at 195 (pin) and 220 (major decision).  LARP 285-pounder Brock Frisik pinned Westfield’s Brody Johnson in the first period to give the S-Eagles the win, 43-34.  Kreidemacher (113), Jonsgaard (132), and Speltz (152) also had pins for LARP.  Mueller (145 > 11-2) won a major decision, Klug (170 > 5-2) a pure decision.  Kryzer (182) won by forfeit.  The S-Eagles then hosted Chatfield and Caledonia/Houston.  The home squad dispatched with the Warriors 57-18.  Cal/Hou’s three wins all came in the bottom six weights.   The Warriors only sent out six wrestlers.  LARP took forfeits at 120 (Zibrowski), 126 (Jonsgaard), 160 (Corcoran), 170 (Klug), 182 (Kryzer), 195 (Jacob Meyer), and 220 (Plank).  Kreidemacher (113) and Frisik (285) won by fall.  Speltz (152 > 5-1) won a decision over Tucker Ginther (who is ranked #9 at 138).  Chatfield took on Cal/Hou 68-8.  The Gophers won forfeits at 120 (Carson Rowland), 126 (Jack Dornack), Tate Karver (160), Seth Goetzinger (170), Grady Schott (182), Campbell Berge (195), and Dallas Burris (220).  Kail Schott (138), Sulley Ferguson (152), and A.J. Karver (285) had pins.  Ben Carrier (113) notched a 15-0 tech fall.  Gage Bartels (106) won an 8-5 decision.  The match between Chatfield and LARP was competitive up until the heavier weights.  LARP won three of the first four to lead 18-6 after 126.  Chatfield went ahead 21-18 via Lukas Carrier’s 16-14 decision win at 145, only for LARP’s Speltz to author a pin (152) that put the S-Eagles back ahead 27-24.  But the Gophers took 160 through 220 all by pin.  They prevailed 51-30.  Bartels (106), Cody Guenther (132), T-Karver (160), Goetzinger (170), G-Schott (182), Berge (195), and A.J. Karver (220) had pins for Chatfield.  K-Schott (138) won by forfeit.  Kreidemacher (113), Zibrowski (120), Jonsgaard (126), and Frisik (285) joined Speltz in authoring pins for LARP.   Twelve of the 13 matches ended in pins.  The Gophers (12-1) are still Class A Lean and Mean.  T-Karver (#9 at 150), Goetzinger (#4 at 160), G-Schott (#8 at 170), and A.J. Karver (#4 at 220) are ranked in state.  LARP is 8-7.  They don’t have anyone ranked in state.
