Lion girls no match for Rockets, clipped again by Cougars

February 16, 2021 by Lee Epps Leave a Comment

The Spring Grove girls (2-5, 2-4 SEC) dropped conference decisions to fast-breaking Randolph on the road and then at home to quick-starting Mabel-Canton. The Lion B-team also sustained a pair of losses, while Spring Grove took both eighth grade games. The seventh graders played only once, a home loss to the Rockets.

Randolph (6-1, 4-1 SEC) literally ran away with the game, outscoring Spring Grove by 30 points (34-4) in transition in the 40-point decision at Randolph. While the Lions shot a season-low 16% (7 for 45) from the field, the Rockets shot 49%, better than any opponent thus far. The transition lay-ups were augmented by six 3-point field goals, an acceptable 29% (6 for 21).

Already three-time All-SEC senior Megan Erickson netted all six treys on the way to 36 points, the most scored against Spring Grove in 17 seasons, since Katie Ohm put in 39 for Elgin-Millville in a 2004 sub-section semi-final.

Jordian Leahy led Lion scoring with 9 points while Katelyn Kraus came down with 9 rebounds.

Spring Grove was down by eight points (24-16), still within striking distance, before Randolph scored the last 12 points of the first half to take a 36-16 cushion into intermission. After halftime, the Lions hit only 2 of 20 shots while falling further behind as the game progressed.

The previous SEC game versus the Rockets was postponed. If it is not made up (not yet rescheduled), this was the final conference contest against Randolph as the Rockets exit the SEC next school year. Having won the last seven meetings, Randolph leads the series, 8 to 2.

The lone Lion win came in the eighth grade game, 27-26. The Rockets won the B-team game, 43-8, and the seventh grade contest, 23-17.

Mabel-Canton scored the first 11 points and went on to win by 11. The Lions would never get closer than eight points, and only for a few seconds. Mabel-Canton led 26-13 at halftime and maintained double-digit leads, by as many as 16 points, throughout the second half.

The Cougars (3-6, 3-5 SEC) jumped ahead 7-0 and then buried 4 of 5 triples to go up 20-5. The Lions missed their first nine shots before Leahy netted a 3-pointer six minutes into the game. Treys were critical; Mabel-Canton did not launch often, but the visitors drilled a 6 of 13, an extremely strong 46%. Spring Grove was a chilly 18% (3 for 17) beyond the arc.

The Cougars finished with a five-point margin from the field and a six-point cushion at the free throw line. Spring Grove earned a season-low seven charity attempts and shot a season-low 14% (1 for 7).

Kraus had Lion-highs with 9 points and 8 rebounds. Emerson Ingvalson contributed in all areas with 6 points, 6 rebounds, 3 assists and a career-high 5 steals. Lydia Solum had a career best with 7 rebounds.

Cougar guard Lauren Wyffels led all scorers with 16 points. Kinley Soiney added 8 points plus a game-high 10 rebounds.

Mabel-Canton, with a previous 34-31 home win, has now swept the season series for the last two years to lead the all-time series, 55 to 53. The Cougars took the B-team game, 40-17, while the Lion eighth graders won, 25-17. There was no seventh grade game.
