Lion boys coast past Hurricanes in home opener, 10-2

April 24, 2023 by Lee Epps Leave a Comment

Caleb Griffin pitched a four-hitter while striking out 10 Houston batters and walking only one as Spring Grove won its baseball home opener, 10-2, in front of a large crowd on April 14. Ty Cleven fanned three in one inning of relief.

Elijah Solum (double, 2 steals) and Brandon Jahnke each drove in two runs while batting 2 for 3. Ezra Griffin went 2 for 4 with a triple, also with 2 runs batted in. Caleb Griffin batted 1 for 2 and stole two bases. Solum has swiped six bases while reaching base eight times during the first two games.

After Griffin struck out the first three batters of the game, the Lion batters began with three hits and a 3-0 lead in the bottom of the first. The only two Hurricane hits, both doubles (Logan Olson, Morgan Rohweder) came in the second inning to make it 3-1. The Lions added three more runs in the bottom of the second for a 6-1 lead.

It was 6-2 when Spring Grove sprinted away with a four-run fourth for a 10-2 lead. That chased Houston starter Logan Olson. In relief, Tristan Stinson shut out the Lions during the final two and two-thirds innings while Griffin and Cleven continued to shut down Hurricane bats.

The Lions improved to 2-0 (2-0 SEC). Hurricanes (2-2, 2-2 SEC) were somewhat shorthanded with two starters not making the trip. Since Spring Grove revived the stand-alone baseball program in 2016, the Lions have won all 13 games against Houston.

The Hurricanes won the B-team game, 6-3, and also swept both junior high games.
