The Spring Grove boys poured in a season-high dozen 3-point field goals during a 77-36 rout at Houston. The Lions (24-1, 19-0 SEC) enjoyed hot 52% shooting on the road the next game after their worst shooting night of the season on their home floor (29%). Tysen Grinde scored his 1,000th career point, joining both older brothers in marking that milestone (Chase 2,336; Caden 1,150). Tysen led all scorers with 23 points along with 7 rebounds and 2 assists. Jaxon Strinmoen did it all with 19 points, 7 boards, 5 assists, 3 steals and 2 blocks. Hunter Holland had a career-high 5 assists with only a single turnover.

Houston (5-21, 4-16 SEC) shot twice as well from 3-point range (42%) as they did closer in (21%). Eight of those closer shots were blocked. Both teams shot well beyond the 3-point arc with SG at 43%. But the Lions, with 15 fewer turnovers (8 to 23), shot more often, sinking 12 of 28 trey attempts while Houston went 5 for 12 from downtown.

Closer to the hoop, Wade Grinde’s guys outscored the ‘Canes with fast breaks, 20-2. Most of that transition success began with 18 steals. Jacob Olerud had 4 thefts with 3 steals each from Strinmoen and Caleb Griffin.

The Hurricanes led early 3-1 and 6-4, but the Grove guys broke a 9-9 tie with a 27-to-3 run and led 46-18 at halftime. The Hurricanes are a young team with nine sophomores on the 12-player varsity roster. Houston started three sophomores, a junior and a senior. Two other sophomores were the only substitutions before halftime. Sophomore Morgan Rohweder led Hurricane scoring with 19 points. Sophomore Carter Geiwitz had 6 points and 6 rebounds. Sophomore guard Maddox Rodriguez added 7 points and 5 rebounds.

It was the Lions’ sixth straight win in the series, including a 61-27 mid-season decision. Grove has taken 61 of the last 63 played against Houston, and since 1949, now leads the series, 106 to 54.

The Lion B-team (17-5) won 51-14 at Houston after a previous 52-19 home victory. Both junior high squads also completed season sweeps.
