Tim Penny addressed the Wykoff City Council at their September 9 meeting to educate them about the Southern Minnesota Initiative Foundation. The foundation has existed for 25 years and Penny has been the president for the past six. He explained the goal of the foundation is to promote regional economic opportunities in Southern Minnesota, as well as a focus on early childhood development.

Penny gave each council member a folder of information about the foundation and asked them to look it over. He explained the foundation offered a variety of grants and programs for communities in Southern Minnesota that could be advantageous for their growth.

According to the Southern Minnesota Initiative Foundation’s website, entrepenuers and childhood development programs could be eligible for grants up to $20,000. The application process is available twice a year and can be accessed through their website.

The council was also told by Penny the foundation has partnerships with various businesses. He gave examples such as Valspar Paint, citing the city could be eligible to discounts if they needed paint supplies. Penny suggested there were numerous possibilities of savings available through the organization.

SMIF invests roughly 90 percent of total expenditures into programs that will increase the economic state of Southern Minnesota. They serve a 20 county region, including Fillmore County. Their goal is to provide management of fund developments and investments, as well as provide grants. Area communities such as Spring Valley, Minn., Harmony, Minn., and Mabel, Minn. have funds that are administered with the assistance of SMIF and Penny invited Wykoff to do the same.

Mayor Lyman Hare and the council agreed to consider the information Penny provided. They were thankful for the opportunity and for his visit. You can learn more about the Southern Minnesota Initiative Foundation by visiting their website www.smifoundation.org.
