Nauvoo

Fri, Jul 12th, 2013
Posted in Wykoff Arts & Culture

In his solo performance “Nauvoo,” Seth Bockley portrays two Utopian visionaries who led ambitious projects in the same small Illinois town on the banks of the Mississippi. Using stones, furniture and a physical performance style, Bockley portrays Joseph Smith, the founder of Mormonism who through visions, persuasion, and salesmanship convinced thousands to join his religion and build his short-lived Utopia, a town he called “Nauvoo.” Then, using strings, ropes, and paper puppets, Bockley presents the parallel story of Etienne Cabet, a French Socialist who convinced hundreds to join him in Nauvoo shortly after the Mormons’ expulsion. These stories of ambition and downfall which intersect in the heartland of America are performed through physical and vocal play and simple but haunting visual transformations.

Nauvoo will perform on Friday, July 19 2013 at 8:30pm the Dreamery Rural Arts Initiative on Dreamacres Farm in Wykoff, Minn.

A story about the Utopian impulse in a season of performances dedicated to defining home.
