Letter about Social Security...

Mon, Aug 24th, 2015
Posted in Preston Letter to the Editor

To the Editor,

A recent newspaper said that Social Security was 80 years old this year. It got me to thinking about taking a look back and also up to the present.

My father’s experience with S.S. was the beginning. My parents were farmers and survived the depression the way most farmers did - by growing a huge garden and raising livestock for meat and chickens for eggs. The first years of S.S., farmers were not included in the system. My father was fortunate to have a cream route that consisted of hauling farmer’s cream to Spring Valley to be made into butter that was then shipped to Chicago.

His pay check was deducted for FOAP (federal old age pension). I recently found all of his deduction payments in a booklet from 1937 thru 1941. One of the 1937 deductions was 14 cents, which was one half of 1% of his October check.

He never gave that much thought, but along in the ‘50s when he turned 65, he was told he should look into it because he might have something coming. Much to his surprise he found that he was eligible. When that first check came in the mail, it was almost with disbelief. I don’t recall what the amount was, but I remember his remark, - “this is like getting money from home”.

Fast forwarding to today gives us a much different picture. Studies tell us in the ‘60s there were five workers for every one receiving benefits. Today, it is fewer than three. In 20 years, there will be two workers for every beneficiary. The AP says, “Don’t expect congress to do anything until it becomes a crisis.” It seems to me the crisis is already here.
