Mabel-Canton student receives Presidential Volunteer Service Award

The Mabel-Canton Board of Education met on April 15, 2014 at 7 p.m. All members were present. Student representatives Jon Selness and Sara Vettleson-Trutza were also present at the meeting.

The minutes from the March 18, 2014 board meeting were reviewed and approved.

The district wished to thank the people of Mabel and Canton for their support and generosity that was displayed during the annual Senior Turkey Dinner The Senior Class served over 1,900 people during the dinner that was held on March 30, 2014.

The board wished to congratulate the girls’ high school bowling team on coming in first in the conference and being conference tournament champions. They received a plaque which Cristal Adkins presented to the school district.

Sara Vettleson-Trutza was recently awarded the Presidential Volunteer Service award. She received a letter from President Obama in addition to a certificate. Vettleson-Trutza has spent many hours volunteering at Noah’s Bark dog shelter in Canton and at the Mabel Lutheran Church.

Abigail Hanson, a Mabel-Canton senior, won the Fillmore County Journal writing project.

The board reviewed and approved the 2014-15 school district calendar. The board also approved designating Christ Hansen to the Electronic Fund Transfers.

Todd Lechtenberg, Mabel-Canton’s business manager, reviewed the 2013-14 budget with the board and noted that there weren’t many changes to the budget since the last school board meeting. The board will see more cuts to the budget at the May 20 meeting.

The payment of the district bills and electronic fund transfers were approved.

Student representatives Jon Selness and Sara Vettleson-Trutza gave their report to the board. Vettleson-Trutza noted that the atmosphere at the school is currently different than normal due to the seniors being on their class trip to Washington D.C.

Principal Nolte stated that several students chose not to go on the senior class trip. He recommended that, over the next few months, the board members review the current guidelines for seniors who do not go on the class trip and revise them as necessary.

Superintendent Jennifer Backer reported that the enrollment numbers for the school district are stable. She also noted that, on April 9, Governor Dayton passed the anti-bullying law. Memorandums will be added to the student handbook as necessa .....
