Winter concerts at Mabel-Canton a success

Aimee Lake, the district business manager, gave the Truth In Taxation presentation at the Mabel-Canton school board meeting on December, 15, 2015. Lake noted that the budget is down -0.9% overall and that it is looking good. Expenditures are currently down 3.13%. 49% of the tax dollars go to the district’s general fund, 6% to the community education fund, and 45% to the debt reduction fund. The total levy for 2016 is $879,572.69 which is the maximum levy amount. Several members of the community present at the meeting had questions regarding the school’s food and transportation services. Lake and Superintendent Backer assured them that the contracts are bid out to get the best price. Due to the school’s location and size, there aren’t many options available.

The board wished the staff and students of Mabel-Canton schools happy holidays and thanked them for a wonderful winter concert series. A big thanks went out to Ms. Ingvallson and Mrs. Larson for the work they put into the concerts. Both concerts had a great turnout.

An unpaid leave of absence for Trisha Soiney in February, 2016 was approved. The resignation of SAC Coordinator, Kay Poole, was approved with regret from the board effective December 23.

Jason Boynton from Smith Schafer & Associates presented the audit report to the board. All the information presented during the meeting is available to the public and reports can be picked up in the district office. Boynton said that there were no concerns during the audit. Due to the decreasing enrollment numbers over the last 7-8 years, the cost per student to run the school is higher than the state average. Boynton noted that this is typical for small schools. The general fund expenditures exceeded the revenue by $47,343 or -0.02% in 2015.

The invoices and electronic fund transfers were approved. Board member Jane Hall questioned why there was a bill for turf maintenance for the second month in a row. She asked if it would be possible to see the contract to ensure the best price. Backer agreed to look into it.

Dean of Students Michelle Weidemann updated the board on the fundraisers held by the school. The book fair brought in $1500 in profit which will be used to buy new books for the school library. Turkey Bingo made $1900 in profit which will be used for the 6th grade Eagle Bluff trip and the middle school ski trip. Food sales had a total of over $5000 in profit. Weideman .....
