Journal Writing Project: Dual enrollment

Dual enrollment is when a high school student is taking a class for both college and high school credit. This is a good opportunity for high school students who are looking to further their education while they are still needing to complete their high school requirements. Although there are colleges that will only allow dual enrollment with certain classes and not allow the student to choose which ones they would want. Colleges also put a limit on the classes that they are able to take so that it only allows them to take a maximum number of classes.

It is a very good opportunity for students because due to the fact that they are still in high school there cost is covered by that state that they are living in. The colleges give a reduced rate for the classes so that the state is not having to pay the normal cost of classes for all the students who are eligible and want to take dual enrollment classes.

There are some schools that have decide to either limit the number of classes that the students are allowed to take or eliminate this option all together. I believe that this is not a really good plan because dual enrollment is there to help students who are wanting to work harder and see how college is going to be before they actually have to attend it full time. I am glad that Mabel-Canton offered this option for me during my senior year and I am extremely happy that I have decided to test myself and add college classes on top of my high school ones. It was hard at times to balance my high school classes, college classes, and extra-curricular activities.

For some students this could be a harmful thing, due to trying to take their high school classes on top of their college ones. There are some students who believe that because they are taking college courses while in high school that means when the high school has a day off or a break that means the college does as well. This is not the case. The college courses go by the college’s schedule and you are forced to follow that. Lastly, while taking these courses you need to make sure that you get all the work done at the time it is due because most professors will not allow there to be any late work like some of the high school teachers will.

Stephanie Phillips is a student at Mabel-Canton High School. She is one of five area students participating in the Journal Writing Project, now in its sixteenth year.
