Paintings Inspired by Scotland and the Cave of Smoo

LANESBORO, Minn. – ‘Paintings Inspired by Scotland and the Cave of Smoo’ will feature oil paintings by Harmony, Minn. artist Paul Brokken in a SEMAC McKnight Artist Showcase at Lanesboro Arts Center. The show opens with an artist reception on Saturday, October 5 from 6-8 p.m. and runs through November 17, 2013. The reception and the show are free and open to the public.

Through project funding from a McKnight Established Artist grant from the Southeastern Minnesota Arts Council, Paul Brokken traveled to Scotland in April 2013 to further his artistic career. For 35 years—ever since he started painting—it has been his dream to experience the Cave of Smoo in Scotland, because Paul’s way of painting has everything to do with that type of solitude found in the cave. From that experience in Scotland, Paul Brokken has created a new body of work that is a further exploration of the shared human condition that is found within the unconscious mind. This proved to be an important turning point in Paul’s artistic career, as he successfully explored a new way of approaching his painting process which involves starting to think about specific images before allowing these images to go through the ‘filtering’ process in his mind. “My goal of experiencing the Cave of Smoo and the northern coast of Scotland was met in unexpected ways,” Paul says. “The landscape was stark and beautiful. The cave had rich history...I experience the world by filtering it through my inner world. The results are what make up the images in my paintings.” The show will include several paintings created from this trip, including one titled ‘What Happens in the Cave of Smoo Stays in the Cave of Smoo.’ “This painting started with a specific image in my mind but then I let it become something else...the painting became something portraying more the feel of the cave rather than a specific image. It is, however, indicative of what the whole trip felt like – magical and surreal.”

This SEMAC McKnight Artist Showcase is made possible by the voters of Minnesota through a grant from the Southeastern Minnesota Arts Council thanks to a legislative appropriation from the arts & cultural heritage fund. Lanesboro Arts Center serves as a regional catalyst for artistic excellence and educational development in providing diverse art experiences for people of all ages.
