Commonweal Theatre Apprentice Company presents “Tigers Be Still”

LANESBORO, Minn. —The Commonweal Theatre Company proudly presents the capstone project of the 2014 Apprentice Company, “Tigers Be Still” by Kim Rosenstock. Performances run from March 20 through March 30. Call the box office at 800-657-7025 or visit Commonweal Theatre online at www.commonwealtheatre.org for tickets.

Roskenstock’s play follows Sherry Wickman, who finds herself unemployed and back at home after receiving her Art Therapy degree, when a new employment opportunity offers her a renewed sense of hope and purpose. Things get complicated, however, when a tiger has escaped from the local zoo. All bets are off. Apprentice Philip Muehe will direct; previous Commonweal credits include assistant director for “The Memory of Water” and “The Last Night of Ballyhoo”. “All of these characters are dealing with something tragic, and it really affects them. It’s a play about depression, that also happens to be extremely funny,” says Muehe. “It’s about the power of community and how we can all rise above the circumstances we may find ourselves in. Once we let down our walls and let people in, we realize we can achieve more together than we ever could on our own.”

The 2014 Apprentice Company also includes Julia Masotti, Diana Jurand, and Mike Swan—all seen on the Commonweal mainstage during the 2013 season. The cast is comprised of Diana Jurand as Sherry, Julia Masotti as Sherry’s sister Grace, Mike Swan as Sherry’s patient Zack, and Resident Company Member David Hennessey as Zack’s father Joseph. The set, costumes, props, and sound design are also handled by the four apprentices, with the addition of lighting designer Thomas White, and stage manager Emyli Gudmundson.

The Apprentice Program at the Commonweal Theatre is a 10-month commitment designed for recent college graduates or young professionals with commensurate experience who would benefit from a prolonged relationship with a small professional theatre company. Focused primarily on experiential learning through a traditional mentor/apprentice relationship, the program affords artistic opportunities, regular classroom instruction, and administrative responsibilities in the areas of marketing, development, and production.

Funding for Commonweal Theatre’s programming is provided in part by a grant from the Minnesota State Arts Board, through an appropri .....
