Oliver Halverson passed away on Sunday, November 30, 2014 at Harmony Healthcare, where he resided the past two years. A Mass of Christian Burial was held on Thursday, December 4 at 11 a.m. at Nativity BVM Catholic Church in Harmony. Friends called at Lindstrom Funeral Home in Harmony on Wednesday, December 3 from 4-7 p.m. and at the church, one hour before services. He will be laid to rest with full military rites at the Calvary Cemetery in Canton, Minn.

Oliver Ellsworth Halverson was born on April 27, 1920 to Oliver and Emma (Hovey) Halverson, on a farm south of Harmony where he grew up, one of ten children. He graduated from Harmony High School in 1938 and attended the Iowa State College in Ames.

He served as a radio operator in the United States Army Signal Corps Third Armored Division from November 15, 1941 to September 28, 1945. He spent time in England and France including landing in the third wave on the beaches of Normandy on D-Day and the Battle of the Bulge.

On June 3, 1947, he married the former Marian Walsh. They farmed near Harmony for 17 years. In 1964, the family moved to Marshall, Minn., and two years later to the Twin Cities area. In 1973, the couple purchased a grocery store in Racine, Minn. which they operated for a number of years. They retired to La Crosse, Wis. in 1983 for 17 years and lived in the Twin Cities area before returning to Harmony in 2003.

Mr. Halverson’s interests included golf, watching the Minnesota Vikings and Twins, refinishing furniture, playing cards and rolling dice.

Survivors include three sons: Chuck (Joan) of Elk River, Minn., Larry (Sue) of Las Vegas, Nev. and Philip (Ann) of Byron, Minn.; two daughters: Mary Beth (Gary) Miller of Ham Lake, Minn., and Emma Jean (Butch) Bollig of Wahkon, Minn.; 14 grandchildren: Ryan, Marian Fiala (Jeff), Steve, Julie Levisay (Cletis), Suzy Klossner (Scott), Kristen, Jill Kubitschik (Dan), Monica Mammen (Jon), Bridget Anderson (Tanner), Loren, Nicholas (Marie), Marina, Melanie Ladd (Taylor), and Kimberly; 21 great-grandchildren: Madison, Abbigail, Sophia, Kyle, Trent, Samantha, Craig, Sarah, Caleb, Tyler, Kenzie, Oliver, Danny, Grace, Henry, Sam, Greta, Collin, Nathan, Nolan, and Oliver, and many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, four brothers, five sisters, and his beloved wife, Marian, who passed on April 25, 2008.
