A happy hour poetry and prose reading

On Friday, May 31 from 3:30-5pm at Quarter/Quarter in Harmony, Minn., poets Kris Bigalk and Kathryn Kysar, and prose writers, Beth Mayer and Amy Weldon will share some of their recent work. Refreshments will be served, and books will be available for sale and signing after the reading.

Kris Bigalk grew up on a farm six miles west of Harmony, Minnesota. She is a poet and writing professor. Her first full-length collection of poetry, Repeat the Flesh in Numbers, was released from New York Quarterly Books in February 2012. Her work also appears in the anthologies Open to Interpretation: Water’s Edge (Taylor and O’Neill, 2012) and Poetry City, USA, Volume 2 (LowBrow Press, 2012) and Poetry City, USA, Volume 3 (LowBrow Press, 2013). She has received two Minnesota State Arts Board grants in poetry, and serves as Director of Creative Writing at Normandale Community College. Kris lives with her husband and children in the Twin Cities.

Kathryn Kysar is the author of a book of poetry, Dark Lake (Loonfeather, 2002), and the editor of a collection of essays, Riding Shotgun: Women Writing about Their Mothers (Borealis, 2008). Her poetry book Pretend the World will be published by Holy Cow! Press. Her poems have been heard on A Writer’s Almanac and published in many literary magazines including Great River Review, Midland Review, Mizna, and Painted Bride Quarterly. Kysar has received fellowships from the National Endowment for the Humanities, Minnesota State Arts Board, and the Anderson Center for Interdisciplinary Studies. She has served as an individual representative on the board of directors for the Association of Writers and Writing Programs.

Beth Mayer’s fiction has appeared in The Threepenny Review and The Sun Magazine. Her story The Way to Mercy, which was selected for the first New Stories from the Midwest anthology, also made the Other Distinguished Stories list featured in Best American Mystery Stories 2010. Her flash fiction has appeared in venues such as vita.mn and mn.artists.org. Beth holds an MFA from Hamline University and teaches at Century College, where she coordinates fiction and poetry readings.

Amy Weldon, an Alabama native, holds a Ph.D. in 19th-century British literature from the Univ. of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, where she edited The Carolina Quarterly.  Her essays, short fiction, and reviews have appeared in a variety of books and print and online journals, including Best .....
