Letter about Chatfield safety issue... To the Editor and the City of Chatfield,

Posted in Chatfield Letter to the Editor

We moved to Chatfield one year ago from Lanesboro. We love the community so far, but I have noticed a huge problem with the pedestrian safety in the downtown area. I always yield to pedestrians; on multiple occasions I have been passed on the right and have had oncoming vehicles not yield. This is causing an even more dangerous situation. I implore you to please do something about this situation.

Our community is growing and so is Rochester, generating even more traffic. On March 31, 2016, I was rear-ended at the intersection by the Cenex and community park, because I yielded to a pedestrian in the crosswalk. Three south-bound cars did not yield. I have, also, had issues at the intersection by Jac’s restaurant, this is one of the locations where I was passed on the right side of my vehicle while yielding to pedestrians. This has happened going both north and south at this intersection.

Please address this situation before someone gets badly hurt. When we go for walks, we avoid downtown because it is not safe. When we go downtown for something, we make sure we park on the side of the street that we need to utilize. I will be sending this letter to the Fillmore County Journal as well as the Chatfield newspaper in hopes that I can rally our community into voicing our concerns. I know I’m not alone, as a gentleman came up to the officer who was assisting with the accident and stated, “This is a huge problem. When are we going to do somethign about it?” The officer said to contact the city council. If you’re worried about the cost of installing safety devices, start ticketing people not abiding by the law.

Sincerely,

Denise Denny
