Winona Brass Band to Perform in Chatfield

Fri, Jul 12th, 2013
Posted in Chatfield Arts & Culture

The Winona Brass Band will perform on Thursday, July 18 in the Chatfield “Music in the Park” concert series at the Chatfield City Park Band Shell. The concert begins at 7:30. Food will be served from 6:00-7:30 by R4 Meats and the Root River Rabbits will serve refreshments during the concert.

The Winona Brass Band was founded in 1993 and, as with all British Brass Bands, is comprised of approximately 25 members that live in Minnesota, Wisconsin, and Iowa. Many of the players are current and former band directors from Winona and surrounding communities. The players also include college students, high school students and community members who just love to play. The common goal of the Winona Brass Band is to provide a top quality, unique musical experience for their listening audiences.

Dr. Richard J. Lindner is the conductor of the Winona Brass Band. He holds degrees from Luther College, Northwestern University and the University of Iowa. He was among the founding members of the Winona Brass Band and assumed conducting duties in 2001.

The Winona Brass Band is a British style brass band made up of 25 brass players and a percussion section. Brass Bands became popular in the mid- 1800s in England as part of the industrial revolution. Advances in technology made it easy and economical to produce high quality piston valves that are incorporated into the instruments. The mellow sounds of conical bored instruments create the unique sound that only a brass band can create. The greatest motivational aspect for the musicians of the British style music is the individuality of the parts. It is typical that as many as 13 of the 25 brass players are playing independently. Also, the literature holds a distinctively enjoyable challenge for the players, and the unique size presents rewarding musical demands. Bring you lawn chair and enjoy a fine summer evening of great music in the Chatfield City Park.
