Three area schools, Chatfield, Mabel-Canton, and Lanesboro, and five basketball squads (boys and girls from Chatfield and M-C, girls from Lanesboro), trekked to Winona for multi-bracketed holiday tournaments.

On the boy's side of the equation, Chatfield and M-C competed in Bracket B. The Gophers notched an opening game win versus Wisconsin's Cochrane-Fountain City 62-59. The long-range bombing of Erik Hilgren (four trifectas, 19 points) and Jesse Julian (three trifectas, 12 points) helped grade the winning road. Jake Peterson added the pavement, scoring 13 points and dishing out 5 assists.

On the other side of the bracket, the Goodhue Wildcats downed M-C 74-46. Cougar junior big-man Steve Smith more than held his own down low, hitting 10 of 15 shots and notching 22 points. He also snared 12 rebounds. It wasn't enough though, as 21 turnovers, and 2 for 16 from downtown, were two big M-C downfalls. Goodhue's Ashton Erie splashed a Lakes-worth amount of points. He had 33.

Those games set up match-ups between Chatfield and Goodhue in the championship bracket, and M-C/C-FC in the consolation bracket. The Cougars again fell, this time 51-38. Smith again shone though. He hit 7 of 13 shots and netted 18 points, while also grabbing 8 rebounds and blocking 9 shots. The two teams committed a combined 51 turnovers, but C-FC grabbed 18 offensive rebounds to M-C's 9. Chatfield also lost, 67-53 to 6 win 2 loss Goodhue. Junior Jesse Julian was the only Gopher in double figures, and led all scorers, with 19.

On the girls' side of things, the Burros played Cochrane-Fountain City and Lewiston-Altura in Bracket A, losing both, 47 to 39 and 62-24. Against the Lady Pirates of C-FC, Meghan Drake (10), Paige Hungerholt (9), and Emma McGrath (8) were the leading scorers. Against the Lady Cardinals, only four Burro gals found the scoring column. Sarah Freese was tops with 7 points.

Meanwhile in Bracket B, Mabel-Canton and Chatfield squared off head-to-head. The Gopher gals prevailed handily, jumping ahead 38-14 at the half and never looking back enroute to a 56-27 victory. Juniors Karen Sass and Kenna Moechnig had 13 and 12, but 7 other Chatfield gals scored. Alix Kerns led M-C with 7. From there, Chatfield faced off with Winona Cotter for the pool play championship, and Mabel-Canton played Grand Meadow for the consolation. Chatfield fell to the Ramblers 56-43. Mabel-Canton meanwhile, notched their second victory of the year aga .....

This NFL season has been crazy. How many of you would have thought the Vikings wouldn't be the NFC North division champs this year as they were last year? I'd bet even fewer would have thought the Vikings would be dethroned, not by the Green Bay Pac .....
