R-P boys respond

The January 5th Minnesota boys basketball poll had Rushford-Peterson ranked 10th in Class A. The Trojans then lost to St. Charles, and to #1 and #3 in Class AA, PEM and Caledonia. They dropped out of the polls. However, the week of January 17th was a different story. First, they took out their 3-losses-in-4 games frustrations on Dover-Eyota. Junior forward Nick Thompson had 31 points, or 23 more than the Eagles had in the second half; 8 more than they had in the game! Trent Vix added 12 as R-P rolled to victory 64-23.

The Trojans then trekked to Lanesboro, for a match-up with the 8-3 Burros. R-P's first shot was errant, but their next six were good, giving them a 14-6 lead. The Burros held R-P deep threat Nick Thompson generally in check in the first half (6 points). The Trojans just got scoring from other sources. All told, R-P converted on 15 of 28 shots (53.6%) in the first 18 minutes. An early 8-point hole for the Burros evolved into a 39-19-halftime crater. The second half began about as poorly for Lanesboro as the first. R-P converted on its first three shots. The Trojan lead grew to 25. Lanesboro didn't throw in the towel though. They immediately responded with an 11-0 run, cutting the deficit to 47-33. Fourteen points was as close as the Burros would get. R-P closed the game out and walked away with a 62-42 victory. Trent Vix led the Trojans in scoring with 17. Mr. Thompson eventually got 16. As a team, R-P made 8 of 15 long balls. Braden Hanson was the only Burro in double figures with 13. Lanesboro was 3 of 17 from deep.

R-P ended its week in Preston. With an 88-52 victory over Fillmore Central earlier in the year, it looked to be smooth sailing for the Trojans. The waters were generally clear for one half of play; R-P established a 35-26 lead even without a contribution from leading scorer Nick Thompson. Then things got choppy. FC put together a 6-0 run out of the second half gate to tighten the score at 35-32. Thompson, Trent Vix, and Ben Krambeer then hit back-to-back-to-back long balls, giving the Trojans a 44-32 lead. Fillmore Central just didn't quit. They kept in striking distance right down to the final minute of play. With 15.6 seconds, Zach Olstad hit a three. It chopped a 7-point R-P lead to four. With 4.6 seconds, Colton Hampel converted a lay-up and was fouled. After making the free throw, R-P's lead was down to one. After a foul and one made Ben Krambeer free throw, Fillmore Central had 3.6 seconds for a miracle. .....
