SEC race thickens

Four teams are fighting for the SEC conference in boys' basketball. Glenville-Emmons was unbeaten (10-0, 14-0) until falling to lowly Hope Lutheran. That loss tied Spring Grove (10-1, 11-6) atop the league. It also narrowed things up for Houston (8-2, 11-3) and Lanesboro (8-2, 12-4). It made Lanesboro's match-up with Spring Grove pivotal. The Burros entered winners of four straight. The Lions entered winners of seven straight. Something had to give and it was the guys from the Grove. Lanesboro snuck past their conference adversary 56-53. Lion star Aric Elton went generously unchecked. He scored 27 points and grabbed 12 rebounds. However, the Burros got solid contributions from Braden Hanson (15), Lucas Johnson (13), and C.D. Hanson (11). Statistically speaking, it was an evenly matched contest save for one thing: The Burros were able to connect on a much higher percentage of two-point buckets than the Lions. With a second loss by Spring Grove later in the week, the Burros jumped ahead two spots in the SEC standing to second, just one game behind Glenville-Emmons.

The FCLMC Timberwolves started their dual with the LA-RP Screamin' Eagles very well. Freshman Trevor Barnes and sophomore Connor Hansen put FCLMC up 12-0 with two straight pins at 103 and 112. From there, though, things went downhill fast. FCLMC wou .....

Wins have been few and far between for the Fillmore Central boys. Through two months of play, the Falcons amassed just two, versus Wabasha-Kellogg and at Spring Grove. They've been close a number of times, real close. They lost at Lewiston-Altura 66 .....

The Fillmore Central girls, winners of six consecutive games, looked to make it seven against Wabasha-Kellogg in Harmony. Unlike their previous four contests, the FC Falcons didn't trample their opponent in the first 18 minutes of play. W-K kept the .....

Steve Smith vs Rushford-Peterson

Fri, Feb 4th, 2011
Posted in Sports

It wasn't really five-on-one; the final stat line just looked that way. Smith's teammates came to play (save for Dalton Stoen who was on the bench in street clothes). They even went into the break tied with the Trojans at 18. Then R-P ratcheted up t .....

Trojan Trap?

Fri, Feb 4th, 2011

The 4-11 Chatfield Gopher boys almost snared the 11-4 R-P Trojans. For a large portion of the game, Tom Bance's squad led. They jumped out 10-2. They led 22-14 at the half. After an Erik Hilgren bucket roughly midway through the second half, they le .....

GMLOK Short-Handed But Capable

Fri, Feb 4th, 2011

The final tally of the Chatfield/GMLOK wrestling dual was somewhat misleading. Just like with area basketball, where certain squads have very low numbers, GMLOK only sent five wrestlers into the fray against the Gophers. They sent out the same guys .....
