3:52 = defeat

One oft-heard sports cliché is, a game is never over until it's over. A team can also win 8/9ths of a game, and still lose. For the Chatfield girls, it was the latter against 6th ranked, 19-3 conference champion Caledonia. Through the first 14 minutes, the Gophers were eight points (22-14) better. In the second half, they were seven points better (34-27). But from 3:52 until halftime, Caledonia scored on 11 of 12 possessions for a grand total of 21 points. In the same span, Chatfield turned the ball over five times, went 0-7 from the field, and 1-3 from the free throw line. That 21-1 run turned that 8-point Gopher lead into a 12-point halftime deficit. The gals of the Chosen Valley didn't give up. They twice whittled double-digit second half Warrior leads, to five and four (with 1:36 remaining). They just couldn't overcome that one dreadful span, and Caledonia kept their conference record perfect with a 64-57 win. For the Gophers, Karen Sass was exceptional scoring 24 points, grabbing 9 rebounds, and dishing 4 assists. Makenzie Miller spelled a foul-plagued Kenna Moechnig and got 13 points and 12 rebounds. Moechnig finished with 11. Northern Iowa bound Amber Sorenson led Caledonia with 19. Bobbi Joe Schuttemeier had 16 and Taylor Winjim 11. Caledonia shot 53%, Chatfield 34%, the Warriors were 5-11 from deep, Gophers 2-12, though Chat won the glass battle 30-22.
