By now, unless you are without a TV, you have seen the Hubert H. Humphrey Metrodome roof collapse. Every time I watch the Teflon colored panels shred and tear and the force of the snow as it hits the turf, I realize how lucky fans are the game was n

Player Profile: Who hasn't heard of Niko Anderson?

Niko Anderson, a name you almost certainly have heard over the last few months, was instrumental in Lanesboro High School's jaunt to the State Finals in 9-man football in late November. Niko scored 24 touchdowns and rushed for more than 1000 yards this year. Impressively, Niko is a 15-year-old freshman and will have three more years to build on his already extremely successful career. When asked how he felt about this football season, he mentioned he is "proud to be accepted by the football team as a freshman." And, he was "excited to play in the dome."
Niko's dominance is not only established on the gridiron. He is a force in wrestling and baseball. If that isn't enough, he also plays the trumpet for the school band. This year he is wrestling on the Lanesboro High School Varsity 160 lb. weight class after wrestling on the Junior Varsity 140 lb. team last year, where he went 28-3. That is a huge weight and talent jump in one year and he has still managed to post a 2-3 record this year, so far. In baseball, as a pitcher he is virtually unhittable. He is an all around great fielder and can play any position with the same authority. He is a fantastic hitter and a thief on the base paths.
Niko's family is full of athletes. His mother, Lori, ran track in high school and continues to run marathons. She is the proud owner of several Lanesboro High School track records. Niko's father, Tim, was a high school wrestler and football player. He has three brothers, younger twins (Caden and Cale, both 8), and an older brother (Chase, 18). Chase played high school football, wrestling, and track. The twins have some conflict between them on who will be better at baseball and football. Cale did declare he is "a way better" wrestler than Caden. Both agree "it's cool Niko is going to be in the newspaper."
Athletically, Niko's star power is endless, but his mild-mannered, well-behaved, and happy demeanor really sets him apart from other student-athletes. He enjoys the recognition, but he doesn't celebrate the attention like some would expect of a person his age. He does what he is asked and he does it well. The classroom is no different for Niko. With all the time consuming practices, games, tournaments, and the video games (which he is also fantastic at), he still manages to get in plenty of studying and finish assignments on time. Lori says, "He can do better," but Niko has managed .....
