Curtis helps Smith; Falcons win

For the Mabel-Canton Cougars boy's team, offense has predominantly flowed through center Steve Smith. In many games, the Cougars could've used a recurrent deep threat to both give them another scorer and to loosen up things inside. Against Fillmore Central, they got that threat. Senior guard Derek Curtis hit four of five long balls for all of his 12 points. Smith did his usual thing. He hit 10 of 13 shots, 7 of 10 free throws, for a game 27-point, 10-rebound night. It just wasn't enough against the rival Falcons. FC got season-highs from senior guard Drew Bahl (17) and point man Zach Olstad (13). They also got 14 each from their two most reliable scorers, James Skaalen and Tyler Eickhoff. M-C committed 26 turnovers, FC 13. In a team effort, the Falcons surged to victory 73-61. It's their 3rd win in four games after just two in their first 16.

One thing is for certain: the 1st place Caledonia girl's basketball squad is better than 2nd place Fillmore Central. The Falcons tried in vain to avenge a 30-point loss earlier in the season. They split the margin more than in half, but still fell 5 .....

The Chatfield gals rattled off their fifth straight victory, and 8 of 9, by dispensing with St. Charles. From the outset, it was all Gophers. They began the game 11-0. From there, the Saints could do very little to make it a contest. Seven was the n .....

Kram-beer me!

It was an ESPN commentator who coined the phrases, "Bartender, pour that man another beer" and "Bartender, give me all three of these" in referring to multiple made long-range shots. And thus, on back-to-back nights in Eyota, and then in Rushford, i .....

I had the pleasure of interviewing Carter Brandt after GMLOK's wrestling match against Saint Charles. Unfortunately, his team was beaten, but Carter was not deterred. He won his match, and the team gave a good effort, so everyone was in good spirits .....

Four teams are fighting for the SEC conference in boys' basketball. Glenville-Emmons was unbeaten (10-0, 14-0) until falling to lowly Hope Lutheran. That loss tied Spring Grove (10-1, 11-6) atop the league. It also narrowed things up for Houston (8- .....

The FCLMC Timberwolves started their dual with the LA-RP Screamin' Eagles very well. Freshman Trevor Barnes and sophomore Connor Hansen put FCLMC up 12-0 with two straight pins at 103 and 112. From there, though, things went downhill fast. FCLMC wou .....
