“Nick T...” for 1,000

Posted in All Sports

If an announcer were to call a basketball game in which Rushford-Peterson Trojan Nick Thompson played, he’d likely use the phrase ‘Nick T…for three!’ It rhymes. It offers clarity (Nick’s younger brother Seth is a teammate so saying ‘Thompson for three’ could be confusing). It’s catchy. One could almost hear a Sportscenter anchor’s grandiose dictation. It’s something that happens very frequently at Trojan games. The wiry 6’4” senior forward is deftly capable of splashing down threes, of scoring points. On January 26, in a road game against Lewiston-Altura, Thompson went over the 1,000 for his career. He’s the 4th R-P player to do so, joining Aaron Hungerholt, Tyler Drinkall, and Jamie Carrier (R-P’s all-time scoring leader with 1,435 points). He’s at least the 13th Rushford, Peterson, or R-P player to do so (a list headed by Peterson’s Terry Highum and his 1,693 points). It’s the second time this season Nick has victimized the Cardinals. In their first meeting, he hit for a career high and school record 43 (including tying a career best, unofficially, with 7 threes). It would’ve been poetic if Nick broke the 1,000-point threshold from distance, but he didn’t. He did it at the free throw line. It did take him three attempts (at 999 points, he missed a pair of FT’s, but hit two moments later). No matter how he achieved the feat, Nick is a shooter, not exclusively, but it’s his calling card. In the words of his coach Tom Vix, ‘(he’s) probably the best pure shooter I have ever coached. Nick is a great example of what hard work will do for you. His many hours of practicing have paid off.’ That’s saying something given Vix’s coaching reputation. The numbers most certainly confirm Nick’s dead-aim too. Through 17 games this season, he’s shooting a gaudy 48.8 percent from 3-point range (60-123). That’s almost not comprehendible. That’s 3.5 makes per game. He’s averaging 22.8 points per contest. Both stats are sizeable improvements on a great All-Conference junior year (83-236, 35 percent from deep, 485 points, not quite 17/game). The sleek left-hander and his quick release are definitely not a dream to play against. Behind Thompson and the Vix’s, PG Trent and Head Coach Tom, R-P is fighting with PEM, Kingsland, St. Charles, and Southland for positioning atop of the 3-Rivers. When Section 1A tournament time comes, the Trojans will be legitimately fighting for a trip to state. Thompson’s been there. As .....
