Agnes E. Schmelzer, 99, of Harmony, died May 9, 2004 at Harmony Healthcare in Harmony.

Agnes was born March 19, 1905, near Henrytown in Fillmore County to Martin and Tillie (Haug) Huseby. She was baptized and confirmed at the Henrytown Lutheran Church. She attended the Henrytown School and graduated from Harmony High School in 1924.

Agnes began teaching in the area country schools, and taught until 1938, when she married Charles Schmelzer in Austin, Minnesota. Agnes raised their two sons Clair and Paul, who were the third generation to farm her family's farm, and raised cows, hogs and chickens,

Agnes began teaching again in the late 1940's. At the age of 60, she graduated from Winona State University with a Bachelor of Science. She spent the last few years of her teaching career at North Winneshiek School.

Agnes continued to live on the farm after her husband's death in 1982. In 1997 she moved to Harmony Healthcare and has lived there since. She was a member of the Assumption Catholic Church in Canton.

Agnes is survived by her sons Clair (Emma) of LaCrosse, Wisconsin and Paul (Diane) of Ridgeway, Iowa; 7 grandchildren; and 19 great grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her husband; an infant brother, two sisters, Nora and Blanche; and a brother Leo.

Funeral Mass is scheduled for 11 a.m. on Thursday, May 13, 2004, at the Assumption Catholic Church in Canton, Minnesota, with Father Donald P. Schmitz officiating. Burial will be in the Calvary Cemetery in Canton. Visitation will be one hour prior to services at the church. The Mengis Funeral Home in Mabel is in charge of arrangements.
