William Sermeus Jr.

William "Bill" Theodore Sermeus Jr., 59, of Lanesboro, former co-owner of Mrs. B's Historic Inn and Restaurant, died of brain cancer April 4, 2003 at Seasons Hospice in Rochester, where he had been a patient three months.

Born May 12, 1943, in Bronx, N.Y., he graduated from Bernards High School in Basking Ridge, N.J., in 1961, graduated magna cum laude from Rutgers University with a bachelor of arts degree in history in 1965 and received an MBA degree from Harvard University in 1971. From 1965 to 1969, he served in the Marines and achieved the rank of captain. He received his basic training in Quantico, Va., served two tours of duty in Vietnam and returned to Quantico in 1968 as an instructor. He received the Purple Heart, Vietnam Campaign Medal, Vietnam Service Medal, Navy Commendation (V), Combat Action Ribbon and Presidential Unit Citation. On June 3, 1989, he married Marie Therese "Mimi" Abell in Golden Valley, Minn. He lived in Raleigh, N.C., before moving to Lanesboro 12 years ago. He and his wife owned Mrs. B's Historic Inn and Restaurant in Lanesboro for 11 years. He retired in 2001. Mr. Sermeus was a member of Phi Beta Kappa, was active in Boy Scouts of America and was pack master of Cub Scout Troop 49 for several years. He had served on the boards of the Minnesota Bed and Breakfast Guild and Lanesboro Business Association. He enjoyed gardening, canoeing, camping and traveling.

Survivors include his wife; two daughters, Dania Leigh Sermeus of Hopkins, Minn., and Erin Christine Sermeus of Los Angeles; a son, William Theodore III at home; his mother, Jacqueline Sermeus of Lake Oswego, Ore.; and a brother, John Paul (Debi) of Wilsonville, Ore. He was preceded in death by an infant son and his father.

There was a memorial service on April 10, 2003 at Bethlehem Lutheran Church in Lanesboro, with the Rev. Kerry Eversole officiating. Flag presentation was by the Lanesboro American Legion. Interment will be in Arlington National Cemetery in Arlington, Va., at a later date. Johnson-Riley Funeral Home in Lanesboro was in charge of arrangements.
