Richard Donald 'Dick' Drury

Richard Donald 'Dick' Drury, 65, of Winona, formerly of Preston, died March 9, 2003 at Community Memorial Hospital in Winona.

He was born Feb. 21, 1938, in Lanesboro to Jimmy and Lillian (Kingsbury) Drury, and grew up in Preston. He graduated from Preston High School, where he was an accomplished pitcher for the Blue Jays, set numerous records and was scouted by the major leagues. From 1957 to 1961, he served in the Strategic Air Command of the U.S. Air Force. During his Air Force career, he served as an air policeman and had various details, including being a body guard for senior military officials and entertainers like Bob Hope and Molly Bee. In 1968, he married Mary M. Wantoch in Fountain City. The couple lived in Winona, and Mr. Drury worked for several years at NSP and Plastic Trading Company. In the early 1970s, he opened Coin Corner and The Dugout Sportscards, which he owned and operated until his retirement in the spring of 2000. He was a member of the Winona Area Jaycees and was a member and past president of the Winona Coin Club. He enjoyed travel, trout fishing, photography and coins, and was a Twins and Vikings fan.

Survivors include his wife; two daughters, Vicki (Randy) Hilliard of Dover, and Janeen (Shawn) Coyle of Columbus, Wis.; one son, James of Winona; three sisters, Nancy Drury, Tricia (Marlow) Vander Plas, and Dianne Ruud, all of Preston; and one brother, Kim of Preston.

The funeral was March 13, 2003 at Central Lutheran Church in Winona, with the Revs. Jeff Franko and John Webster co-officiating. Burial will be in the spring at Crown Hill Cemetery in Preston, with military honors by American Legion Leon J. Wetzel Post No. 9 of Winona. Watkowski-Pronschinske Funeral Home in Winona was in charge of arrangements.
