Hillard C. Torgerson

Hillard C. Torgerson, 85, of Burnsville, Minn., formerly of the Rushford area, died July 21, 2004 at Ebenezer Fairview Ridges Nursing Care Center in Burnsville.

Born June 21, 1919, in Whalan, he grew up in North Prairie and Highland Prairie, Fillmore County, and as a youth did farm work in Minnesota and shocked wheat in North Dakota. He graduated from Rushford High School in 1938, studied mathematics and teaching at Winona State College, where he played college football, and joined the Army in 1942. He attended military government school at Yale University for 18 months, was a decorated member of the military police, saw combat in England, France, Netherlands, Belgium and Bastogne, was wounded in 1944 and returned to the United States in 1946. In 1947, he graduated from Luther College, where he was a starting guard on the football team for two seasons and a member of the Norse. He did graduate study in mathematics at Iowa State University in Ames and then was a teacher and coach in Calmar, Iowa. He began working for Standard Oil Co. in 1951. After his retirement from Standard Oil in April 1975, he moved to Burnsville and worked for realty firms. From 1977 until his retirement in December 1990, he worked for the U.S. Post Office, Postal Data Service in suburban Minneapolis.

On Aug. 14, 1947, he married Helen Remund. Mr. Torgerson was a member of Prince of Peace Lutheran Church in Burnsville and formerly served as president of St. Mark’s Lutheran Church in Storm Lake and Estherville Lutheran Church.

Survivors include his wife; three sons, Thomas R. of Seattle, H. Robert (Lois) of Wilmington, Del., and Lyle (Gail) of New Hope, Minn.; a daughter, Ann Torgerson of Edina, Minn.; five grandchildren; and a sister Janet King of Golden Valley, Minn. A sister preceded him in death.

The funeral for Hillard C. Torgerson was July 24 at Highland Prairie Lutheran Church, with the Rev. Wade Davick officiating. Burial was in the church cemetery. Hoff Funeral Homes-Rushford Chapel was in charge of arrangements.
