Henry Jr. Brand, 77, of Moose Lake, Minn., formerly of the Preston area, died June 21, 2003, at Mercy Hospital in Moose Lake.

He was born July 18, 1925, in Fargo, N.D., and grew up in Duluth. He graduated from Duluth Central in 1943. He went to work at an early age to help support the family. He joined the Navy and served as an electrician in Pearl Harbor refitting ships. On Dec. 24, 1947, he married Lois M. Obacka in Duluth. He worked for Northwestern Bell Telephone and then was called up by the Navy for the Korean Conflict. After his second tour of duty, he continued his career with Northwestern Bell and retired in 1985 after 39 years. Over the years, the family lived in San Diego, Austin, Minneapolis and Preston and after retirement moved to Moose Lake, where he spent summers, and wintered in Harlingen, Texas.

He was active in Christ Lutheran Church in Preston and taught Sunday school. He served on the board of directors for the Spring Valley Hospital and also for Camp Onamia, a Lutheran Bible camp in central Minnesota. He was a longtime member of the Confederate Air Force, dedicated to restoring and preserving flying examples of military planes. In 1992, he served on the crew of a B-24 Liberator, which flew to England in commemoration of the 50th anniversary of the arrival of the 8th Air Force in England during World War II.

He started the Preston flying club, which established an airport and bought several planes. He loved flying and used the planes to go on fishing trips and to visit his children. He also enjoyed fishing, hunting, playing cards and camping with his family.

Surviving are his wife of 55 years; two sons, Steven (Thim) of Oroville, Calif., and Michael (Helen) of Bismarck, N.D.; two daughters, Cynthia (Mark) Brodhun of Byron, and Lori (Carl) Mueller of Atlanta; 12 grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; and three sisters, Lorraine "Penny" (Joe) Dunokvic of Minneapolis; Kay (Bill) Racette of Sturgeon Lake; and Kathleen (Charles) Latimer of Overland Park, Kansas.

A memorial service was held June 28, 2003 in Hope Lutheran Church in Moose Lake, the Rev. Jan Mehlhoff officiating. His body was cremated with burial in Sunset Memorial Cemetery in Moose Lake.
