Willford - Merlin C.

Merlin C. Willford, 81, of Canton, died Jan. 16, 2005 at Saint. Marys Hospital in Rochester following a brief illness.

He was born July 2, 1923 to Claude and Ethel (Amy) Willford, on the family farm north of Canton and graduated from Canton High School in 1940. As a boy, he unloaded coal from the train and delivered it to customers. In 1942, he married Arlone Hanson. Mr. Willford farmed and held several other jobs, including driving school bus and hauling fuel oil for Midland Co-op, and was a Harmony police officer until 1961. Then he and his wife started the Harmony House Restaurant, which they operated until 1981. He then was a tour guide for Amish tours, operated Willford Cottage on the home farm and worked at Cenex in Canton. His first wife died in 1992. On June 18, 1994, he married Gloria Knowlton Martin at Burr Oak United Methodist Church. He was a member of the Burr Oak United Methodist Church and was chairman of the church council, and he served on the Fillmore County Historical Society board and the Tri-County Advisory Board.

Survivors include his wife; a daughter, Judy (Bob) Lehmkuhl of Rochester; three sons, Jerry (Nancy) of Spring Valley, Jim (Vickie) of Grand Rapids, Minn., and Jon (Barb) of Lanesboro; two stepdaughters, Marilee (Alvin) Hein of Mabel and Debra (Ron) Schloer of Minneapolis; two stepsons, Craig (Peggy) Martin of Beaver Dam, Wis., and Brent Martin of Platteville, Wis.; six grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; eight stepgrandchildren; one stepgreat-grandchild; and a sister OraMae (Richard) Patterson of Afton, Minn.

The funeral for Merlin C. Willford was Jan. 19 at United Methodist Church in Burr Oak, Iowa, with the Rev. Anita Bane officiating. Burial was in Greenfield Cemetery in Harmony. Mengis Funeral Home in Mabel was in charge of arrangements.
