Roppe - L. Sydney

L. Sydney Roppe, 70, of Mabel, died suddenly October 9, 2003 at Saint Marys Hospital in Rochester.

Born Jan 3, 1933, in Spring Grove to Owen S. and Selma I (Grindeland) Roppe. He graduated from Spring Grove High School in 1951 and from Luther College in Decorah in 1957. He also attended the University of Oslo, Oslo Teachers College and the Norwegian Hogskole in Telemark, all in Norway. He married Mari Anne Hubred on Aug. 4, 1962, at the Kolbu Church in Kolbu, Toten, Norway. The couple lived in Lanesboro until 1964, when they moved to Norway. Mr., Roppe taught for 16 years in Norway until 1980. The couple came to Mabel, where he taught English and German at Mabel-Canton High School until his retirement in 1998. Mr. Roppe also was an independent tour guide and traveled throughout Europe and Scandinavia. He was the first dean at the Norwegian Language Camp (called Skogfjorden) at Concordia College in Moorhead, Minn. Mr. Roppe was member of the Highland Lutheran Church in rural Spring Grove. He also belonged to the Vesterheim Muiseum in Decorah, the Masons, the Sons of Norway, the Minnesota Education Association, Lektorlag and the Norseman Federation.

Survivors include his wife; three sons, Tor Erik (Laura) and Dag Oystein (Sue), both of Mabel, and Baard Arne (Shelley) of Minneapolis; a daughter, Lisa Kristin (Brian) Quandahl of Gilbert, Ariz.; seven grandchildren; and two sisters, Doreen Johnson of Brooklyn Center, Minn. and Yvonne (Gerald) Goetz of Rochester. He was preceded in death by a son and a brother.

The funeral for L. Sydney Roppe October 13, 2003 in Trinity Lutheran Church, Spring Grove, with the Revs. David Andrea and Ray Caldwell officiating. Burial was in Highland Lutheran Cemetery, rural Spring Grove. Mengis Funeral Home, Mabel was in charge of arrangements.
