Mary R. Kelly, 95, of Houston, a former longtime Canton resident, died Sept. 11, 2004 at Valley View Nursing Home in Houston.

Mary R. Knox was born March 1, 1909, in Prosper to James and Anna (Hanlon) Knox. She graduated from Canton High School in 1927 and from the Iowa State Teachers College in Cedar Falls. She taught for six years in rural Bluffton and Burr Oak, Iowa, schools before her marriage. On Oct. 3, 1935, she married Francis P. Kelly at the Assumption Catholic Church in Canton. They farmed in the Canton area, and after moving into Canton in 1954, she worked in the Canton School cafeteria for 17 years. Her husband died Oct. 16, 1973. Mrs. Kelly continued to live in Canton until becoming a resident at Valley View Nursing Home in Houston in 1996. She had served on the Prosper School Board and was a member of the Assumption Catholic Church and its Altar Society, Royal Neighbors and Prosper Neighbors Club.

Survivors include three daughters, Marilyn Erickson-Anderson of Houston, LaDonna (Cleon) Brenno of Canton and Mary Faith ( Lynn) Martinson of Monona, Iowa; five sons, Leo (Carolyn) of Harmony, Jim (VerJean) of Canton, Paul (Peggy) of Albert Lea, Douglas (Rita) of Rochester and Bob (Lisa) of Dodge Center; 37 grandchildren; 36 great-grandchildren; and four great-great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by a son, a grandson and a sister.

A funeral Mass for Mary R. Kelly was Sept. 15 at Assumption Catholic Church in Canton, with the Rev. Donald P. Schmitz officiating. Burial was in Calvary Cemetery in Canton. Mengis Funeral Home in Mabel was in charge of arrangements.

Schwinefus - Richard L. ‘Dick’
