Lloyd Foltz, 86, of Hesper, died March 9, 2003 at Green Lea Manor Nursing Home in Mabel.
He was born July 28, 1916, in Canton to Henry and Clara (Anderson) Foltz. He attended school in Canton and worked on the family farm near there. He then worked as a carpenter in Hesper before becoming a mechanic for Northwest Airlines. On June 1, 1941, he married Lorna M. McMillen at Hesper Lutheran Church. From 1943 to 1945, he was in the Army Air Corp and was a mechanic in the China-Burma-India Theater. After the war, the couple moved back to Hesper, where they had lived since. His wife died Dec. 29, 2002. He worked as a carpenter for Nick Traanas and eventually started his own construction business, which he worked at until about 1986. He was a member of Hesper Lutheran Church, the American Legion for 55 years, the Toot and Whistle Club, and was a life member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars. He enjoyed operating the family steam engine, entertaining, and playing the keyboard and banjo.
Survivors include a son, Lyle (Judy) of Apple Valley, Minn.; two daughters, Lynn (Dan) Gundlach of La Crosse, Wis., and Luann (Stanley) Vongroven of Canton; 10 grandchildren; 11 great-grandchildren; a brother, Dean (Henrietta) of Caledonia; and a sister, Helen Selness of Texas. He was preceded in death by a son, four brothers and two sisters.
The funeral was March 13, 2003 at Hesper Lutheran Church in Hesper, Iowa, with the Rev. Hans Floan officiating. Burial was in Hesper Lutheran Cemetery, with military rites by the Mabel American Legion and Veterans of Foreign Wars. Mengis Funeral Home in Mabel was in charge of arrangements.
