Wemett - Francis Harold

Francis Harold Wemett, 88, of Bethany on Cass in La Crosse, Wis., formerly of Lime Springs, died July 17, 2005 at Gundersen Lutheran Hospital in La Crosse.

Born June 12, 1917, in Mabel, he was involved in agriculture and farming in the tri-state area as a young man. In the early 1940s, he represented Vernon County in the Wisconsin Cornhusking Contest. He served in the Army during World War II and was wounded on Oct. 29, 1944, in Italy. He was awarded the Combat Infantry Badge and the Purple Heart. He lived in Milwaukee from 1946 until he moved to Lime Springs in 1948. He worked for the Howard County Engineer’s Office until retirement. In 1995, he moved to Bethany on Cass. He was a member of American Legion Post 545 in Lime Springs, and received a 50-year membership recognition award in 2002.

Survivors include four sisters, Lorraine Dustin of Cincinnati, Norma Reed of La Crosse, Mary Strangstalien of Westby, Wis., and Patricia (Bruce) Daniel of Belvedere, Ill.; and two brothers, Robert (Beverly) of Alma, Wis., and Thomas (Kathy) of Keokuk, Iowa. He was preceded in death by three brothers.

The funeral for Francis Harold Wemett was July 21 at Lindstrom Funeral Home in Lime Springs, Iowa. Burial was in Pleasant Hill Cemetery in Lime Springs.
