Letter about Prinsen's column

To the Editor,

I would like to respond to those readers who have taken offense at Bonnie Prisen's column treating Scripture and homosexuality. It is clear to me that Prisen's purpose is not to mock or disparage the Bible; rather the point is to have the reader consider the difficulty of basing an entire social policy and moral attitude on one line of the Hebrew Scriptures. There are a vast array of commands and prohibitions in Jewish Law. Most of these commands and prohibitions are not followed by the majority of believers who maintain that the Bible is their single most important guide to life. What then is the principle for following some of these scriptural requirements literally and not others? I commend Prisen for calling attention to this issue with care and some wit.
