Letter about gay marriage legislation

I do not think I could be more appalled by the news that some of our elected officials in Washington and St Paul have chosen to introduce and support legislation banning the marriage of homosexual couples. The supporters of this legislation feel they must act to preserve "decency", and one can hardly argue with the nobility of their motives. It is however, their actions that we must challenge. Why would you wish to interfere with two people who want to celebrate their love and lifelong commitment? If people feel the "decency of marriage" is in jeopardy, then perhaps we should have constitutional amendments prohibiting 55-hour Las Vegas marriages.

Regardless of how one feels personally about homosexuality, it cannot be denied that this is an

issue of civil rights. What do the proponents of this legislation want to do next, establish separate drinking fountains? Segregated schooling? It is the shame of American culture that our history is scarred with wars against bigotry. We have struggled and continue to struggle to overcome prejudices against gender, race, and religion. Now it seems that some Americans feel that there are not enough walls dividing us as a nation, and therefore we need more.

America's laws should exist to extend the promise of equality and fairness to all, not become a barrier to them. Our elected leaders need to hear from us that while we value their dedication to forging a better country, creating a second-class citizenry is not the way to do it.
