Gundersen Medical Foundation receives grant to provide local breast cancer screening and education

Susan G. Komen Minnesota has awarded a $32,196 grant to Gundersen Medical Foundation to provide breast cancer screening and education in rural Fillmore and Houston counties for the third consecutive year. The program will provide 50 women who are uninsured or underinsured and not eligible for the Sage program with free screening mammograms and breast health education aboard Gundersen Health System’s Mobile Mammography Unit.

“Since 1993, Susan G. Komen Minnesota has raised more than $44 million and awarded grants to non-profit organizations supporting critical breast health and breast cancer programs in Minnesota. With these funds, women in Minnesota are able to have access to breast health awareness and education, breast cancer screening and a number of treatment support services. We’re so pleased with the breast health services that Gundersen is bringing to the community and are proud to support programs that have an immediate impact,” states Denise Blumberg-Tendle, director of Mission Initiatives, Susan G. Komen Minnesota.

Gundersen Health System and Gundersen Norma J. Vinger Center for Breast Care will be offering free screening mammograms at these locations in 2015:

Aug. 7 – Fillmore County Public Health offices, Preston, Minn.

Aug. 22 – Houston County Fair, Caledonia, Minn.

Sept. 11 – Houston County Public Health offices, Caledonia, Minn.

Oct. 1 – Miken Sports, Caledonia, Minn. (open to employees, temps and their spouses only)

These special events are in addition to the more than 40 days in 2015 Gundersen’s Mobile Mammography Unit is scheduled for screening events at Gundersen clinics in Minnesota.

“Detecting breast cancer at its earliest, most treatable stage through a screening mammogram remains the best way to fight the disease. Through this generous grant, we can reach out to a population of women who may not have otherwise had an opportunity to receive a mammogram,” says Deb Kane, clinical manager of Gundersen’s Norma J. Vinger Center for Breast Care, Mobile Mammography and Regional Mammography.

Thousands of lives are saved through screening mammography. To schedule a mammogram at one of the free screening events, patients can call (800) 851-7153. Walk-in appointments are welcome. If you have questions, call Gundersen’s Norma J. Vinger Center for Breast Care at (608) 775-2886.
