"'We hear them declaring the wonders of God in our own tongues!' Amazed and perplexed, they asked one another, 'What does this mean?'" Acts 2:11-12 NIV
The people who experienced the first Pentecost had good reason to be amazed and perplexed. They experienced the fulfillment of an ancient Bible prophecy. On that day they heard the sound of a terrible windstorm, but there was no wind. The sound issued from a building in which about 120 of Jesus' followers were meeting. Attracted by the unusual event, the crowd of people from all over the Mediterranean world heard the followers of Jesus speaking words which they understood in their own languages. Their natural response was, "What does this mean?" Peter explains not only the miracle of Pentecost, but also several other ancient prophecies God fulfilled through the suffering, death and resurrection of Jesus. The result was that over 3,000 people came to believe in Jesus and were baptized.
Extraordinary events in our world today still lead people to ask, "What does it mean?" Whether it is an earthquake, flood, oil spill, war, or unnatural behavior, God has an explanation for it. God predicted many of the very behaviors and events we see taking place in our world. With an understanding that God both knows and will resolve the problems, believers cope with the issues and look with anticipation to the return of Jesus and the final resolution. Do you have a question that puzzles you? The Bible provides answers. See you in church.
