Fifteen years of lutefisk and meatballs

By Barb Jeffers

Fountain Lutheran Church held its 15th annual Lutefisk and Meatball Dinner on Saturday, Oct. 6, 2012, from 10:00 a.m. to 7:00 p.m. This year’s dinner was overwhelmingly successful. Being one of the first dinners of its kind in the area each year makes it a very popular event. According to Chairperson Debbie Jeffers, there were 650 people served on Saturday with nothing left over. The volunteer workers served 400 pounds of lutefisk and 190 pounds of meatballs throughout the day.

The full menu includes Lutefisk with melted butter, meatballs, mashed potatoes and gravy, candied carrots, coleslaw, cranberry relish, sweet soup, rommegrot, lefse, flatbread, desserts including Norwegian baking, milk and coffee. Serving a meal for a crowd this size takes a large amount of work and planning.

Jeffers says, “We try to start our planning process in late July of every year and get our letters and work schedules out by mid-August.” There is a work day prior to the dinner to make lefse, and another evening to make krumkake and rosettes. The Friday of the dinner the meatballs are rolled and cooked, coleslaw dressing is made, and cranberry relish is prepared. The morning of the dinner work begins at 6:00 a.m. and continues late into the evening.

Approximately 60 people help out during the time the Dinner is served, split into two shifts of 30 people. Fountain Lutheran Church hopes to see everyone at the Dinner again next year.
