A Different Arbor Day

Tue, Apr 20th, 2010
Posted in Faith & Worship

"And the Lord God made all kinds of trees grow out of the ground--trees that were pleasing to the eye and good for food. In the middle of the garden were the tree of life and the tree of the knowledge of good and evil." Genesis 2:9 NIV

Whether it is the small child looking for a safe tree to climb or the poet who marvels at the "spreading chestnut tree," trees have held a fascination for people. Our national Arbor Day was born out of the practical benefits of trees as they anchor our soil and provide protection from the forces of nature. Along with their physical attributes, trees are sources of a number of medicines and cures.

The "Tree of Life" and the "Tree of the Knowledge of Good and Evil" are two of the best known trees. God tested the love of the first humans by forbidding them to eat from the "Tree of the Knowledge of Good and Evil." Not only did the fruit look good to eat, but the temptation to become like God was too great a temptation for Adam and Eve to resist. The sinful nature that opposes God's will and urges us to disobey continues to lead to death. It also led to another famous "tree," the "Cross" of Jesus. "Christ redeemed us from the curse of the law by becoming a curse for us, for it is written: 'Cursed is everyone who is hung on a tree (Gal. 3:13).'"

Jesus' resurrection brought the hope of eternal life. The Tree of Life is again mentioned in the book of Revelation when God promises to make everything new. In Revelation 22, heaven has a river of life flowing out of it and "On each side of the river stood the tree of life, bearing twelve crops of fruit, yielding its fruit every month. And the leaves of the tree are for the healing of the nations. No longer will there be any curse (Rev. 22:2-3a)." Trees are wonderful. They brought hurt, and they bring healing. After you celebrate Arbor Day, celebrate the Maker. See you in church!
