Can You See Where You're Going?

"I am the light of the world. Whoever follows me will never walk in darkness, but will have the light of life (John 8:12b NIV)."

Where I was working there were no windows. The thick walls of the building silenced any outside sounds. Except for a momentary flicker of the lights, there was no noticeable change as the electric generator kicked in. I only learned from the comments of people coming to work what was happening outside. How different the night was for my family as the storm knocked out the electricity and knocked down part of a large tree near the house. They worked cautiously in the dark to find a cell phone and then a camping lantern. Emergency city crews worked in the dark to clear the streets of trees and limbs that had fallen.

Danger and darkness seem to go hand in hand. Physical darkness can hide dangers. People who are blind must use caution when they move in new surroundings. The loss of light for a sighted person can fill them with dread. In the Bible Jesus announces that he is the Light. Jesus provides light for people to see their way through the dark and sometimes stormy parts of life. With Jesus filling one's life, the storms of life can pass without worry. "But if we walk in the light, as he is in the light, we have fellowship with one another, and the blood of Jesus, his Son, purifies us from all sin (1 John 1:7 NIV)."

While searching for that light in the darkness, pray. Whether the storm you are facing is producing sheets of rain and wind or tears and sorrow, seek the Light of the world. See you in church!
